Customer Review: Inherent flaw- Don't waste your time.
Summary: 1 Stars

When this unit is working it is MARVELOUS. However, our original purchased stopped functioning just shy of the 1 year mark. They graciously replaced it (some known defect), however now that unit has experienced the same exact fate. This time they claim its only a 90-day warranty and the best they can do is a knock some money off a new unit. This would be the 3rd unit in less than 3 years. As for replacement parts- the cups are very hard to get, but when we did we made sure to buy plenty (5), and changed them more frequently than the 6 month limit this time around too. It did not help. I am not sure what the manufacturing dilemna is here, but apparently its inherent in many, if not all, of their machines. After going through the internet I see that I am by no means alone. This apparently is happening/has happened to a great number of people. Being that this does appear to be the only appliance of its kind, one must wonder how it is that Whirlpool keeps shrinking their warranty, yet doesn't either recall or address this flaw once and for all.

Customer Review: Best invention ever! World's greatest time saver!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the best invention I have ever used! I cannot imagine my life without a Fabric Freshener. As a matter of fact, when I travel and need to use an iron I think to myself, "I can't believe that I used to need to iron all my cloths... what a waste of time!" I was a little leery of the claim that it would remove odors. For a test I went to a smoke filled bar to become saturated with odors. When I got home I put my sweatshirt in the Fabric Freshener and ran one cycle. In the morning I could not smell any hint of smoke on the sweatshirt. I was amazed and still ended up washing the item because it just didn't seem possible. The device works great for freshening your outfit when you go out for an evening or taking clothes out of winter storage. I have noticed that my work clothes are lasting longer because I am laundering them less. Sitting at a computer all day my clothes don't get "dirty", but they don't seem fresh so I run them through the steamer and wear them a second time at a later date.

In regards to reliability issues there are 2 main things that are important:
1). Use only distilled water and not tap water. The hard water creates a build up and can clog the pump system when the vinegar cycle is run.
2). It is necessary to change the water cup every 6 months (as stated in the user manual). There are water softening pellets that breakdown over time and will get into the system. It is like putting sand in your car engine.

I have one unit that is 2 years old and one unit that is 18 months old. I have not had any issues with either one, but I have only used distilled water and changed my water cups every 6 months. I have many friends and family with a Fabric Freshener (after hearing me rant and rave about ours) and they have not had any issues either. They also use distilled water and change the cups on a regular basis. I think the device is such a time saver that even if it would break every year, I would still buy another! However, with proper maintenance it should last a long time.

Customer Review: in one word "EXCELLENT"
Summary: 5 Stars

I was really afraid of buying this freshener because of some reviews I read, but finally I decided to give it a chance, so on October 2007 I bough it, and until this day it works GREAT, I use it a lot cause me and my husband both works for big offices and wears suits 5 days a week, so the regular use is 6 times a week sometimes more if we have a social event on some weekdays or weekends, it works great, eliminates all the smells like cigarette, normal odors, perfume etc., eliminates most wrinkles and the scent of fresh after each use is like wearing something new. I am really happy, and I suggest to everyone that is planning to buy one that ALWAYS use distilled water, never use regular tap water maybe that's the problem that causes some of the fresheners to stop working, but I can say is a wonderful idea from whirlpool and for what I save on cleaners it already paid it cost and much more.

Customer Review: I love it!
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm very surprised to see anything negative about this unit. It's my favorite thing.

I've been wishing for an old-fashioned airing closet for years, and the Fabric Freshener fills that function beautifully, and more. It relaxes wrinkles and removes odors in about 1/2 hour- hands-free. It works better than the shower and costs much less to operate. It gives you that outdoor fresh smell even in inclement weather. Oh, how I wish I'd had this when my smoking parents were alive! I used to unpack anything clean one item at a time, hang it it front of the bathroom window for a full day and keep the bathroom door closed. My post-Christmas unpack went on forever. Even the laundry didn't always remove the smoke smell. The Fabric Freshener definitely would.

The degree of success you're going to have with this unit will depend on the fabric. Rayon was made to be aired. Most lighter weight fabrics do well. I have one "suede-cloth" suit that I freshen successfully, but I think that's about as heavy as I would go and expect success on the wrinkle front. Some fabrics are resistant to steam "de-wrinkling" and that's that, but most do well. For mustiness, I've found no limits.

The unit came with two big weight clips meant to go on the bottom of pants. They work well, but you have to be careful not create even more wrinkles with the clips. I mislaid them immediately and didn't find them for months. (Hanging on a pair of pants I rarely wear.) I didn't particularly miss them.

One weakness in the unit is that it doesn't come with hangers. Obviously, you need to use all-plastic hangers, and they have to be sturdy. It's not that easy to come up with something for your pants to hang from.

There's also the height issue. It opens to 57", which seems plenty tall, but some of that is motor and handle, then there's the space the hanger takes - I can clip my pants to a hanger and have them hang straight, but I'm 4'11". A taller person would need to fold them over a hanger.

You also need to understand that it will NOT remove the soil. So be careful - it's easy to get carried away with your perky-looking, fresh-smelling, worthy-of-a-commercial outfit and overlook the grimy collar and gruesome cuffs!

My husband picked this up for half-price. When I learned that half-price was 100 bucks, I gave deep consideration to the potential pleasures of spouse-smacking. I probably could have just freshened my clothes with the steam coming out of my ears. He convinced me to give a try, though, and I've been thanking him ever since. It has paid for itself several times in dry cleaning bills, not to mention the environmental savings.

Customer Review: Died after 9 months

What a lemon! This items worked when, when it worked. It now has completed stopped responding. Whirlpool says "call an electrician". Yeah - $100 service call on a $200 item.
