This blender does everything I anticipated it would do well plus a few more functions I was hopeful it would do:
1) Juicing -- You can blend whole fruits and vegetables and strain with cheesecloth to create juice. It's an extra step, but if you have your doubts as to how often you would actually use a juicer, and know how messy it is to clean one, it's a good option to know you can just use the vitamix.
2) "Dry" blending & creating meals/flours --I haven't tried every possible type of item, and I don't think the "wet" container this comes with would do the BEST job of creating flours or else they'd not have created a $100 dry container as an accessory, but this wet one seems to do a fine job of creating meals/flours especially if you do not need 00 fineness or are simply creating rustic breads or making your own flax meal. I don't feel the need to buy a dry container.
I'm definitely fitting in more of my fruit & vegetable servings each day as a result, and I was not really a smoothie junkie prior to owning the vitamix.
As an added bonus, I bought a slightly cheaper one from the "used" section on amazon which was actually from the "Amazon Warehouse Deals." It simply had been opened at the top but none of the items had been used and they were sealed (including the cookbooks included). It even came with its 7 year factory warranty--sweet!
