Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Victorinox 8-Inch Bread Knife with Blade ProtectorCustomer Review: Comment on jspangler review of Forschener 8" bread knife Summary: 4 Stars
This review of he Forschner 8 inch bread knife is confusing. It is critical of certain aspects of the knife but then goes on to say that the reviewer has two "other" Forschner knives she is happy with, the 10 inch and 8 inch bread knives. I thought the review was about the 8 inch bread knife.
Can you clear up this confusion?
Description of Victorinox 8-Inch Bread Knife with Blade ProtectorIn 1884 Master Cutler Karl Elsner started his cutlery factory in Ibach, Switzerland and in 1897 he crafted the Victorinox Original Swiss Army Knife. Since that time the Elsner family has continued to craft tools of percision, durability and quality. Victorinox is one of the largest producers of cutlery in the world. Victorinox cutlery has been distributed in the United States since 1884 to culinary professionals under the brand name R.H. Forschner. Each blade is stamped from a single sheet of metal. The blade is then hardened, tempered, ground, polished, etched and finished. A serrated blade is the best for slicing through crusty as well as soft loaves of bread. The long eight-inch blade on this bread knife also beautifully slices through tomatoes and bagels, and can be used to cut cakes as well. Because the blade is stamped rather than forged, the price is kept reasonable, yet the high-carbon, stainless steel is extremely durable and the ground, tempered edge maintains its razor-sharpness for an amazingly long time. The molded Fibrox handle provides a sure grip, has no grooves or rivets to harbor bacteria, and is dishwasher-safe. All in all, this is a lightweight and versatile knife. Started in 1884 in Switzerland, Victorinox is perhaps best known as the manufacturer of the Original Swiss Army Knife. Today Victorinox by R.H. Forschner makes everyday cutlery for the home as well as professional forged cutlery and multi-purpose tools. Included with this knife is a plastic BladeSafe protector that snaps securely in place over the blade, protecting not only the knife blade from nicks when it's stored in a drawer or tucked in a picnic basket, but hands that reach in. Hand-finished in Switzerland, the bread knife (model 87549) is covered by a lifetime warranty against defects. --Ann Bieri
