This piece in my kitchen makes me feel like a queen! It grinds cleanly and effeciently and looks great. The rubber grip is great and the stainless steel is easy to keep clean. I was expecting the ends to have covers although they don't there isn't much "leaking" of ground salt and pepper on the counter unless of corse I tap it. So overall I was very pleased with the appearance and performance, and use it daily. Would I reccomend it to a friend? definately! Customer Review: Excellent pepper and salt grinder

I chose this pepper grinder because of the great reviews it received, and also because it comes combined with a salt grinder, saving space since my kitchen is pretty small.
One of the previous reviewers said this grinder doesn't seem to cater to a coarse grind as easily as it does a fine grind; this worried me a little because I prefer a coarse grind. After receiving the unit, I played with it a little bit, and figured out that when you adjust the ceramic mechanism for a coarse grind, the spacing doesn't open up until you twist the unit in the opposite direction of normal operation. So this unit actually does fine grind and coarse grind equally and exceptionally well. And it produces large amounts of fresh ground pepper and salt really efficiently. I highly recommend it.

Wanna know how happy I am with this pepper mill? I own 3.
Well 2 pepper mills and a salt grinder all from Vic Firth.
I have a 7 inch for white pepper, a 12 inch for black pepper and a 12 inch Salt grinder for my sea salt.
Lets talk about how pretty they are, the natural cherry wood with the satin finish just looks soooo good. It's got a clean soft sheen that looks a lot more modern without being trendy.
Anyway, These are very classy looking table additions.
But the real beauty of this grinder is the functionality. It's so simple that I cant believe every grinder isn't built the same! Regardless of how you set the grind it will stay there until you change it. Nice right?
Sounds obvious but I've owned 3 others that did not work that way.
It doesn't seem to cater to a coarse grind as easily as it does a fine grind, so depending on what you're cooking this can be a bit frustrating.
But for most meals and use at the dinner table nothing beats freshly cracked pepper and this does it's job.
These are great pepper mills, you'll be happy you bought one.

I've owned a number of pepper mills through the years, some extremely expensive. This is the first one that has grated consistently--from keeping the particles all the same size, to maintaining the size setting on the mill every time I use it. The setting doesn't shift in the middle of my final presentation, and suddenly "present" me with big chunks of pepper on my fresh mozzarella. Elegant, functional, sturdy, guaranteed for life. I have several Vic Firth and a few other brands of salt and pepper mills. I grew up on them so, they are a necessity it seems. These days you will find many types and makes of pepper and salt mills yet, almost all of them "chop" the pepper corns and do not have a setting which will stay put nor grind the pepper as it should.
Vic Firth has the right pepper mill and the salt mill even though it is "nylon" it does a spendid job in milling up the kosher salt chunks sold in the stores. You cannot find an easier place to shop and find great Vic Firth products than Amazon dot com.
This style is my favorite as it stands very sturdy and has a larger top diameter for big hands. My second favorite is the Mario then the Federal.
