So many tampers cost five times more and, to me, do not have the clean great lines of this piece. Aluminum, and I expected something very light, but it has such heft that I rolled it around a bit and wondered if, somehow, it was brushed steel. FIts to perfection in my Rancilo Silvia portafilter. If you're a home barrista and you want to tamp your coffee this tamper works well. It's not too heavy and fits nicely in your hand, giving the tamped espresso that final spinning polish is not a problem either. It's not milled out of one piece of aluminum, I had to tighten the two pieces after about two weeks (from the spinning?). Make sure you get the right size. If your tamper is too small it's hard to exert the right amount of pressure without the grounds pushing their way up and making a mess. This is a good tamper for the price, no nonesense, no frills but does what it's supposed to.Customer Review: There's more to it than smashing coffee grounds...

My preference is NOT for a tamper with a round top. That is not comfortable to the palm of my hand when pushing with the pressure required for a good tamp. The slightly convex shape of the Vaneli's tamper is a perfect fit.
It is important to tamp grounds FLAT in the filter. If the tamp is crooked, you will have problems getting a good extraction. This tamper is perfect for a Rancilio Silvia basket. The height of the bottom piece is 'just' tall enough to reach to the rim of the double basket with 14g. of coffee. I can easily feel with my fingers on the tamper/basket joint if the tamp is not square in the filter. That gauging factor makes it a snap to get the tamp correctly positioned.
