sure it's a bit expensive for a kitchen timer ... but it's very cute and it's Alessi.
When you set the timer, you need to first turn 360 degrees clockwise, past the 0 mark. Then turn back to the time you want to set on. (This is explained in the leaflet that comes with the timer .. but who reads the operating instruction of a kitchen timer anyway) I had omitted the first step when I took it out of the box and thought it was not working.
Eventually figured it out. The timer DOES work.
