My daughter got this in her Christmas stocking, too. It's fun to use. The pencil is thicker than normal pencils which I have read is good for children just learning how to write their letters.
The draw back to these is that they either need to be hand whittled to sharpen or you need a pencil sharpener that does larger pencils. I found a cheap plastic pencil sharpener at a "mart" store. Because the twig is a natural assymetrical shape it's a bit more difficult to sharpen but it can be done.
Also the pencil has no easer but that's no biggie. The pencil is very charming looking especially for those who love nature and it makes a nice looking mark on paper.
