Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Diatomaceous Earth 12oz Shaker

Customer Review: Did not work
Summary: 1 Stars

I was really hopeful with this product seeing as though I was 9 months pregnant when our two cats introduced fleas into our home. I didn't want to use any chemicals between being pregnant and being asthmatic. The powder was easy to apply, messy to clean up and did not give me any problems with my asthma or allergies. The only problem is that it didn't work!! We sprinkled everywhere let it rest a couple days and vacuumed and reapplied and we still had fleas. When the shaker was nearly empty and the fleas were still around- with my newborn at home- we had to use a stronger product.

Customer Review: Do not make my mistake. I have truly tragic feelings about this product
Summary: 1 Stars

Do not order this product without also ordering breathing protection and possibly gloves. This product is considered non-toxic as far as fumes go. But it is such a light powder - the consistency is like a cross between baby powder and powdered sugar. I was hoping it would be more like baking soda which is kind of heavier and falls directly down when using it. Nope. This is a very light and fluffy powder that gets airborne easily.

I made the mistake of getting a tiny poof of it in my face and I lost 36 hours of my life. I was a zombie that had to be cared for. The condition you get when getting this in your lungs is called silicosis and is dreadful. How I realized I had it was that I woke up in the middle of the night with my sinuses entirely blocked and I was coughing out my lungs. I honestly thought there was a chance I could die if the blockage got worse. I was staring at the clock at 4am, clutching my phone in case I needed to call an ambulance. It was actually one of the scariest experiences I have had in years. I am still hacking out my lungs, but at least I am able to walk among the living again.

I thought, well, at least it will have solved my problem. Nope. This powder may kill bed bugs, but it does not seem to kill bed bug eggs, from my experience with it. So that means in order to be effective, this powder needs to remain in/on the items treated indefinitely. Well I don't want this stuff around me or my pet any longer. And if it's not gonna really solve the whole problem, it was a huge waste of my health for nothing. I am not gonna subject my sniffy little dog to the suffering I have gone through/am going through.

I chose this product to save money and use something that would not get anyone sick. It didn't save money, because not only MUST you absolutely buy the dust masks, but I also ordered gloves because I got some on my hand too and it really dried out my skin. I've since had to order the nasaline sinus clear kit, and a couple of lung health restoratives, and a package of old fashioned handkerchiefs to protect the skin on my nose from the constant blowing - the likes of which I have never done before. The whole thing is a huge regret. I wish I would have used the money that I spent on all that stuff and just paid the expedited shipping on the packtite I ordered - which is stuck somewhere in snowpocalypse 2.0. Whanh.

First of all, I'm still dealing with the effects of my encounter with this product. For best results in ridding your lungs of this so-called 'non-toxic' product try english ivy extract. I am taking it in pill and liquid form. Also I have bought two other lung supplements that seem to help. Read - lasting, costly effects.

On top of what has happened to me and my health and budget, it dawned on me today what further tragedy this product has brought into my life - with tears. I realized in my health-challenged stupor, once I put on my gloves and mask and had the fortitude to shake off the remainder of the dust - I have done irreparable damage to the creek-side eco-system that is my yard. I shook this non-toxic pesticide near a frozen creek because I was too sick to think it through. Come spring-time the devastation will begin. All the buggie-eggs planted last fall will die, and the birds will have to hunt someplace else. This product made me an eco-villain. I am devastated. TOF.

Customer Review: Don't use this product in your home.
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought a new comforter and it must have had insects in it, because suddenly I had them in my house. I was trying to avoid using an exterminator because I didn't want to use a poison in the house which might harm my cat, so I bought this product. First, I didn't see where it got rid of the insect problem (turned out to be spiders). Second, it got into everything and those sharp edges acted like an itching powder which was awful. Third, when I did finally call an exterminator he told me not to use this product because it can cut your lungs the same way it cuts the exoskeletons of insects. He did say it would be all right to use outside, so I'll use it on ants this summer. I just have to be sure to wear a mask.

Customer Review: Effective and non toxic
Summary: 5 Stars

I've had trouble with water bugs and cockroaches in my bathroom. I
used one of the electric plug in devices and got rid of most of them, but
I kept noticing a few still around. I spread some powder around with a spoon and then spread it out thin with a paper towel. Thankfully the bugs (including giant water bugs) disappeared. I'll be glad for the
shaker as it will make applying it easier. As I have cats, it's nice to have something non toxic to apply. I had to get used to little white
paw marks around the house though. My cats didn't seem to mind it at all.

Customer Review: Good Stuff
Summary: 5 Stars

Used this to help get rid of bedbugs and other pests. It has definitely reduced the number of bus I've seen and was easy to use.
