Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Thermos E10500 16-Ounce Leak-Proof Travel Mug

Customer Review: Almost Perfect
Summary: 4 Stars

I actually spent about an hour researching my coffee travel mug purchase. I had four criteria that were must-haves:

1. It had to be a mug that I could drink directly from... not a thermos with a separate cup for instance.

2. Stainless steel interior: I found that my current plastic cup was retaining too much sour milk odor even thought I rinsed it out after use. Also although the chance is slim, metal is less likely to leach dangerous chemicals than plastic.

3. Sealed: as in throw it in my bag and not worry what orientation it is in...upside down.... whatever.

4. 16 oz: or more... many travel mugs are 12 oz and that is just too small

This item that you are looking at on this very Amazon detail page indeed meets all the criteria above. It is surprisingly one of few that do.

Once I bought this, I found some other advantages that I liked about it:

- The thermal insulation is superb. Hot liquids stay hot seemingly forever. (it's actually a minor problem if you start out too hot as it takes forever to cool to sipping temperature :-), but removing the lid helps out there)

- 360 degree drink lid: This lets you drink from anywhere around the rim of the cup, but more importantly the design is such that it closely approaches drinking from a normal (un-lidded) cup. So no dribbly holes to drink from and no uneven dispensing due to trapped air.

- easy to clean lid: There are no hidden channels in lid where liquid might get trapped. This apparently si a problem with Oxo Good Grips LiquiSeal Travel Mug

- It has a handle: not something I needed, but it is actually handy for hanging it from your belt when you need both hands free

The Thermos E5 has lived up to my expectations, and meets my coffee travel cup needs. However it does have a couple of drawbacks, and for these I will deduct 1 star (I would deduct only 1/2 star if that where possible):

- Narrow opening: When the lid is completely removed, the opening is rather narrow. This not only makes cleaning (that is scrubbing rather than rinsing) difficult, but is sure to confound that barista you order that complex coffee drink from.

- Wide bottom: OK, this is great for stability, but it prevents it from fitting in most cup holders. I know it was not designed for this, but it is something I would ideally like to have.

- Open/Close mechanism requires 2 hands. Since it essentially twists on/off like a cap, it cannot be operated 1-handed like a "pop open" type mechanism

- Open/Close mechanism may fall off if open to wide. I have not yet had this happen, but it is potentially possible that if you twist it open you may go too far and the top will come off completely while you are drinking

Customer Review: Almost indestructible
Summary: 5 Stars

A lot of people have written about the heat maintaining quality of the Thermos E5 mug, so I won't beat a dead horse. Last night, I drove out of my garage, forgetting that I had left the mug on the back bumper of my truck. I was heart broken to find it missing the next morning, and had to settle for a slightly less expensive, but inferior substitute for my morning tea. I saw the bottom rubber base on the way out of the neighborhood and wrote the mug off as a flattened mess. What a surprise I got on my way home, when I saw it laying in the gravel a few feet off the road by the base. I jumped out of the truck and found a dented, scarred and scratched mug. Taking it home, I washed it, fit the base back on (I'll have to glue it on with some liquid nails later) and put my tea water in it. Viola!, still keeps the water as hot as ever. I really love the ability to screw the lid down all the way and throw it in my back pack like a regular thermos and open it up hours later to hot tea or coffee.

Customer Review: An almost perfect travel mug & here's some pointers
Summary: 4 Stars

1/3 star off for having too small capacity, 1/3 off for being too thermally efficient, & 1/3 off for having a wide bottom(it takes one to know one)
1) After sifting through the confusion caused by Target/Amazon calling the Thermos E5 20-oz bottle a "mug", I picked one of these up. First time out, as per usual, I filled it with boiling water, then poured in my tea & left for work. I was finally able to drink it about 8-9 hours later! The 20 year old Thermos mug I'd been using had just had its [...] kicked by 4 hours.
2)You can have a prob with screwing the drink-through stopper back in. I count it a good day if I do it first time(I'm easily amused).
3)I wish this had about 4 fl oz more capacity,
4)I recommend filling this with cold H2O: would make it more usable, unless you either won't be drinking your hot bev for hours, or you like searing your mouth, palate, & pedicle
5)The footprint of this is too wide for most factory cup holders, or at least in the Ford Fusion, Chevy Impala, & Dodge Caliber. I'm going to take my jackknife & shave off the fins/ribs that Thermos' designers thought would make the E5 look hip, cool, & happening. Having to open & close this each time you want to sip sucks when you're driving. I hope the surgery won't void the warranty, but of course, like with all Thermos steel products, this will last forever.

PS- Watch out if the outer gasket tears or vanishes. Mine did, I didn't notice, & it leaked all over the place. I called Thermos, they sent me 2 new gaskets, and it's back to being great.

Customer Review: Another Great product
Summary: 5 Stars

I ordered 2 of these in a panic becaues I love the first 2 (my wife took one) I was afraid I would not be able to find another so I now have 2 spares. This is the best Thermos / mug I have ever had tough as nails. Great service from Amazon as well.

Customer Review: As Good as it Gets
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a fantastic mug, and as a teacher, I've used quite a few. With my previous thermos mug (which is not available), I often found myself knocking it over and spilling green tea all over my students' papers. Needless to say, they were not often happy to receive their essays riddled with green splotches on the corners!

This cup, with its broad base, is very difficult to tip over. As long as you tighten the lid after each sip, you won't be worrying about spilling anyway. I love being able to sip hot tea throughout the morning.

The base of the cup is quite wide, but I love the way it looks. It does not fit in my Scion XA holder so I clip it to the pocket on the side of the door and it works fine. For me, this is a small price to pay for having a desk that is free of tea stains. Let me tell you, my students were quite happy to see me with a new mug.

I've always been weary of travel mugs. They leak, don't keep the drink hot, or a button breaks off. This thing's tough and I hope to have it for years to come.
