Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Sunbeam Hot Shot Beverage Machine

Customer Review: Great Product/Can't Live Without It
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a great product and my second one. My first one was over ten years old. I use it to make instant coffee several times a day. The best part is how fast it makes the hot water for my coffee.

They improved it by placing the "On" switch on the top thus making this great product even better.

When I travel I take it with me. I cannot be without this product.

Customer Review: Great concept - lousy execution
Summary: 2 Stars

It's very handy; almost a necessity if you drink a lot of tea, etc. We had one many yrs ago -- it was great and lasted a long time. And we have had several more since.

They are now made in China, and thus the "quality" is now JUNK. As other reviewers point out, they are apt to leak/drip, heat inconsistently [some go crazy steaming up the room], and conk out completely within a couple of years.

Unfortunately, there is no alternative similar product that I am aware of.

Customer Review: Great for a Single Cup of Coffee Fasssst
Summary: 5 Stars

In a household with only one person who wants a single cup of coffee or tea in the morning or a solo cup of hot chocolate anytime, this is the product for you. I couldn't live without mine.

Customer Review: Great for the office -- AND for those with younger children
Summary: 5 Stars

I got a Sunbeam Hot Shot about 6 years ago. It had been recommended by someone at work. I used it at work every day (and still do) -- and have since bought another for home. It makes 2 cups of hot water -- and is great for everything including tea, instant oatmeal and hot chocolate. When my daughter was younger, it was great for her because she could make her own hot chocolate or instant macaroni and cheese, and I wouldn't have to worry about her being burned on the hot stove. With the hot shot, you just pour your water in the top and hit the "heat" button. The machine will then shut itself off when the water is hot and you can dispense the water.
This is a great product and I highly recommend it for anyone who wants fast, convenient, and safe heating for hot water.

Customer Review: Great idea but needs some work
Summary: 3 Stars

I've had the Hot Shot machine for about 7 years now, and it still works great. I like that it is compact, that the heating coils aren't exposed, and that it shuts off automatically at boil. Obviously the longevity is excellent, but I have always had some issues with it.

For one thing, mine leaks. (My original one did not but my previous roommate's boyfriend stole mine and replaced it with his leaky one, he had his about 6 months before I got mine.) I've always had to keep a cup under it or make sure I empty it.
Secondly, it's too easy to trigger the heat button unintentionally, which can damage the coils if there's no water in it, and since it leaks you can't leave water in it.
Also, it,s not that convenient to fill, filling a cup with water and pouring it in can be a bit messy unless the cup has a pour spout. It also only makes about 12z or so at a time.

I'm certain the manufacturer would advise me to drain and unplug it when not in use, but that's not the point. We all like to do what's convenient for us. I recently got the Bodum Mini Ibis (also available here at amazon.com) and I'm much happier with its features and the way it works.
