Customer Review: Nice -- but only when it works

I had 3 of these units. I'd echo the comments others have made about the maintenance being a bit of a pain. The faint gurgling and boiling noises don't bother me at all. And it does a good job of what it's supposed to do: Humidify the room.
However, in the 2nd winter season, on one of the units, I was awoken in the night to find the unit had shorted out internally and acrid smoke was coming out of the unit. I couldn't trust the other units (for my family's safety). Slant/Fin customer service was initially apologetic but made no offer to give me a new unit and eventually ignored my emails.
