Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Sharp R-820Bw 900-Watt 0.9-Cubic-Foot Convection Microwave, White

Customer Review: Great Product
Summary: 5 Stars

I really like this product. It has a lot of functionality. I bought it primarly for the microwave capability; but, thought the other features would come in handy. I find myself using the other features almost as much as the microwave. One of things that I like best about this oven is that I can make open face tuna melts using the grill function. That is what I missed most about my old toaster oven. This oven had saved me the cost of a toaster oven.

Customer Review: Great Product
Summary: 5 Stars

After reading all the reviews I did purchase this product and am so happy that I just love everything about it. Love the convection oven especially and the fact that it can now replace several other items in the kitchen and give me more room........Works great and it is simple to use with the written instructions.

Customer Review: Great little oven
Summary: 4 Stars

I had purchased this microwave/convection oven to replace one that I had for 13 years ( Sharp Carousel )We used it every day, we were using it more than our larger oven, it worked great and when it finally stopped we tried to get it fixed but the part cost almost as much as this oven, so we paid $20 more and now have a brand new oven with more features. This one is working fine I have no complaints it was a great purchase, plus it arrived so fast. I don't know how they did that.

Customer Review: Great microwave-toaster-griller-small oven!
Summary: 5 Stars

After reading extensive reviews here and elsewhere, I bit the bullet and ponied up for the expensive little thing, and must agree with the reviewer who said Sharp clearly doesn't know what a great thing they have here, or else they have the worst marketing plan in history. This is a TERRIFIC appliance! It has replaced my old toaster oven and microwave. How much room would that save in YOUR kitchen?
There is more functionality than I normally use, so I'll stick to the things I use it for.
1. First, it does boil water as fast as any other high-powered microwave. The reviewer who wrote otherwise clearly had a defective unit. It's a flawless microwave with flat, easy to clean surfaces, even heating, and a silent turntable. It took me a while to get my head around microwaving with a metal turntable, but it works. I have not had the courage yet to microwave with the 'small, flat' pieces of aluminum foil the manual says you may cover dishes with, but I will try it since everything else they've claimed it does, it does.
2. It does make perfectly fine toast, but I have noticed the length of time varies. A bagel will toast in the same time as my old toaster, about 4 minutes, but sliced bread does take longer, about 7 minutes. To me this isn't a drawback, just worth noting.
3. The grill feature is excellent, heating up small batches of crispy or fried things much faster than my big oven or old toaster oven could. This function is flawless.
4. The convection feature heats casseroles or bakes chicken in exactly half the time of any conventional oven, as it should. The exhaust above the top of the unit (from the fan) can be warm, although the unit remains touchable. I don't see a hazard here, but I would abide their recommended clearances on top, and not store things that would suffer from heat(I have moved my bananas).
5. Compu-serve setting are usful, but you need to read the manual if you intend to use metal cookware, as some setting incorporate microwave cooking for part of the cycle. I use only pyrex, and never think about it.
In conclusion, buy with optimism, read the manual (really) and if you don't think it's performing well, return it for another one because it really works wonders! This is a fantstic tool.

Customer Review: I've had mine for 5 years and if it died I would buy another one today
Summary: 5 Stars

I find that most microwave ovens have limited appeal to me. They are fine for quick-defrosting, softening butter, warming up left-overs, boiling a cup of water, etc. However, for real cooking I don't use a microwave, especially for cooking meat.

When I prepared to move to Texas in 2005 I decided to give my old microwave away and buy a new one for my new home. I looked for a few weeks and was uninspired until I found this one. I was dubious as to how well it would work, but after almost six years I am still delighted to own this machine. I use it so much more than I have ever used a microwave oven before because it IS so much more. You can read the specs for yourself, here is how I use it:

* Grilling - This is a fantastic feature which I use often. Nothing beats a real charcoal grill, but when it is impractical to use one the Sharp comes in handy. You have to use the steel rack and set the oven for "Top" or "Top and Bottom" grill. I use it for grilling asparagus, corn on the cob, shish kabobs, etc. I don't use it for grilling large pieces of meat but a person could if they wanted to, it's just a little messy because the grease and juices end up in the tray.

* Convection - I use this occasionally, mostly when I entertain and need a second oven. I works great for casseroles. I've roasted Rock Cornish Game hens in it and they turned out great. The cooking time is cut by about 30-40%.

* Roast - This setting uses a combination of microwave and convention. It is useful when you are in a hurry but want that roasted (not microwaved) taste and texture. I use it for baked potatoes and root vegetables.

* Microwave - It's pretty easy to control the setting here. The control panel for the microwave features is uncomplicated and easy to set. I use the "add-a-minute" feature often. I just hit it for each minute I want and off it goes! If I am cooking something for a long time I punch in the numbers, but for 1-5 minutes and this is quick.

If this oven stopped working I would order another from Amazon that same day. It's not perfect, but it is versatile and hardworking. It could be larger (like 1.2 cubic feet) but works great for me.
