Customer Review: Carousel stopped working

I've had the microwave for a couple of years but have lived with a malfunctioning carousel for about 6 months, planning to replace it. This is in a vacation home so isn't even used very often. And I don't use a microwave for much more than reheating food very occasionally. Other issue that I don't like is ease of use - not intuitive at all!! This product was given to us as a gift about one year and three weeks ago. I'd rate it adequate. Its flexibility contributes to its complexity. It's probably got more features than we need.
This evening we were heating a dinner dish and in a matter of moments the kitchen and house filled with a burning plastic smell and extremely noxious smoke. It was the microwave; not the food. The smoke was thick and it was difficult to breath. It's 14 degrees Fahrenheit outside and we've got the doors and windows open trying to air out the house. I'll press to test the Sharp limited warranty process but I'll also notify the government product safety folks. Our experience tonight seems similar to the review preceding mine. If we've got an unsafe trend beginning with this product the right folks need to know. Thirty minutes after we shut it down I had to use an oven mitt to carry it out to the garage because the bottom right side was still too hot to touch.

While I can't vouch for the microwave breaking down as other 1-star reviews report, I can confidently say this is perhaps the worst purchase I've ever made. Originally attracted to the Sharp R-305KS for it's "Best Reviewed" mid-sized microwave oven from a popular and objective online review service (no, not CR), I sadly ignored the growing number of 1-star ratings and bit the bullet.
What's the most important "feature" of a microwave oven? Well, now I know that it's "heating evenness," something I've always taken for granted with microwaves until owning the Sharp R-305KS. Nearly every time this microwave is used to reheat leftovers, my wife or I (or both) are faced with returning to the microwave to re-reheat our meal because of cold spots in the food. This was never a concern with our old 1000-watt microwave.
I could mention other cons (buttons wearing, popcorn setting burns popcorn, hard to keep clean), but not heating food evenly is enough to justify the 1-star rating. Perhaps I got a lemon? Maybe, but at this point 25% of reviewers have given it one star. Not good.

I've found the Sharp R-305KS Microwave oven to be everything I expected it to be. It looks great and works great. Meets all of my microwave needs. My 21 year old son depends on it for his after work dinner heat ups. He thinks he can actually cook now. My GOD what life was like before microwaves and computers. I BOUGHT THIS MICROWAVE IN MARCH 2009! FOR $200.00 I received on 17 th of the month and on the 20th of APRIL IT STOPPED WORKING. I only used it about 10 times to make popcorn. IT MADE A LOUD SCREECHING SOUND AND WOULD NOT GET HOT. SINCE I USED IT< I COULD'NT GET A REFUND FOR MY MONEY AND THE ONLY OPTION WAS TRYING TO TAKE IT THE SERVICE CENTER. TOTAL RIP OFF. NOW IT"S $99.00!!!! HMMM I WONDER WHY? GO WITH EMERSON.
