Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Scoop Away Fresh Scent Clumping Cat LitterCustomer Review: Meow! Summary: 5 StarsWe have two cats. For a time, we had three. All of our cats have been indoor cats because of a neighborhood coyote problem. The cats seem content with the situation, but it takes a certain amount of extra care. Food has to be brought in and used food has to be collected and taken out. With cats, the latter task is easy. All cats seem to know what a litter box is and how to use it. The task for us was to find an appropriate box, an appropriate place and the best litter. After trying a variety of different types and brands, we settled on Scoop Away litter and we're very pleased with it.
Scoop Away is one of many brands of clay-based litters and they all work in much the same way. The cat urinates or buries feces in the litter. The urine reacts with the clay and collects in clumps. Both the feces and the clumps are then scooped out and discarded. With this particular litter, we are able to go three to four days between scoopings. Odor control has been excellent. After about three scooping events, we add new litter to the box. The whole process is routine and simple and this is the best cat litter we've ever found for the task.
There are several minor problems. First, the litter is dusty, particularly when being poured into the litter box. To largely circumvent this problem, we do the pouring outdoors. Any later dust that the cats raise in digging is inconsequential. Second, the litter has a "Fresh Scent" smell added which some people find objectionable. We notice the smell only when the litter is being poured; after it has settled down it no longer is evident. For those who feel strongly about the matter, an unscented variety is available.
We use an enclosed litter box. The cat goes into a little door, tends to business, and emerges out the little door. The enclosed box helps prevent litter from being scattered about by vigorous digging. However, as the cat emerges from the box, small amounts of litter may cling to the paws. As such, we have devised a small doormat which collects an estimated 75% of the escaping litter and most of the rest gets no farther than a few feet from the box entrance. We use the vacuum cleaner to gather the escaped granules. A word of warning is in order: water should not come into contact with this litter as it will cause a sticky, hard-to-clean-up mess.
Scoop Away comes in a variety of different-size containers. We buy the 40-pound containers at our local warehouse club. It is the same product as this review.

This unique formula is designed to help stop odors before they start. That means a cleaner smelling litter box for you and your family. 99% dust free. Fill your clean litter box with approximately 2 1/2 inches of Scoop Away. Scoop out clumps and solids daily. The rest of the litter stays clean and fresh. Simply add more Scoop Away as necessary to replace what you scoop out. Normally you won't have to change the litter box again. Note: The manufacturer wants to remind their customers, particularly pregnant women and people with suppressed immune systems, that a parasite sometimes found in cat feces can cause toxoplasmosis. Special care should be taken in handling your cat litter box. For ease and protection in handling, use liners and disposable gloves. Keep litter tray away from food preparation areas and always thoroughly wash hands after handling the litter tray. Unused cat litter poses no toxoplasmosis risk.
