Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Sassafras 14 3/4 Round Superstone Baking StoneCustomer Review: Baking Stone Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this at a department store and with the store coupon only spent $9.00 for it. The regular price was $19.99. I have never owned a baking stone before so I can't compare it to other stones. I have used it often for pizza, bread, and foccacia with really good results. The stone comes with a rack, but I don't use it since I leave the stone in the oven and remove the pizza or other baked foods with a pizza peel. I really don't know what the rack is for. Maybe it's just for transporting the stone into and out of the oven after it's cooled down. Don't have a clue. I know someone who used it to remove the blazing hot stone from the oven! I don't think that's a good idea. We bought the stones at the same time, but hers broke after a few uses. Her husband told her it wouldn't last long because she would cut the pizza on the hot stone as well. He said this was basically scoring the stone, and it would probably break either in the oven or when she takes it out as it adjusted to the temperature change. Sure enough, after removing the stone from the oven it cracked as she was setting it on the stove. She was lucky she wasn't burned. Mine is over three years old, and I still have it and continue to use it.
Most of the time, I just leave the stone in the oven on the rack that covers the floor of the oven. If it needs cleaning, I take it out when it cools and scrub it with my nylon bristle brush under hot water.
The product description says that the stone can double as a serving tray and cutting tools won't harm it. This doesn't ring true since it's made of stone which, as we all know, can be cut, chiseled, ground, etc. Also using this as a pizza stone and/or serving tray for just baked pizza isn't practical for reasons mentioned above, and if it's used for pizza, it will be stained and unsightly for use as a serving tray for other items.
I recommend this item for its intended purpose, a baking stone, but not as a multitasking item.
Description of Sassafras 14 3/4 Round Superstone Baking StoneComes With Rack. Great For Traditional Pizzas, Pretzels, Breads And Cookies. 15 Inches In Diameter Updating the historic tradition of stone baking for today's household kitchen, Sassafras offers a baking brick boasting even heat distribution and moisture absorption. Dry heat generated from stone produces crispier crust making this ideal for preparing pizza; but its baking properties make it equally appropriate for breads and cookies. Although microwave- and convection-safe, the stone's 14-3/4-inch diameter makes it best suited to the traditional oven. Lifting and transporting are simplified with the included metal rack designed to fit snugly without slipping and provide two handles. Stoneware care consists primarily of avoiding thermal shock--extreme changes in temperature--and hand washing with hot water. It is best to avoid using cleaning agents as the stone may retain and pass on a soapy flavor. The disk can double as a serving piece and won't scratch with the use of knives and other cutting tools. -- Amy Arnold What's Inside the Box 14-3/4-inch circular baking brick, metal rack, recipes
