I ordered lots of these for my company to help protect my guys from loose and occasionally aggressive dogs we encounter in our line of work. After lots of research into various sonic repellers, whistles, etc., I decided upon the Pet Parade because of its value. For $10 a pop, I don't think we could have found anything better!
As other reviewers pointed out, there isn't much clearance space for the 9V battery, so after carefully closing the battery compartment, I wrapped each repeller (or 'Dog Phaser' as we call it) with a little bit of electric tape, so there's no risk of it popping open while in a pocket.
Obviously, something sonic like this won't work on EVERY dog. Some dogs are deaf. Or just don't hear that frequency anymore. And sometimes when a pack of dogs gang up on you, they'll pump each other up and might be more resistant to the effect.
But, 95% of the time, there IS an effect. I don't think it's painful to them--I think it just surprises them and interrupts whatever thought process has led to barking, posturing, etc.
This device has already saved one of my guys from being eaten by a huge, aggressive St. Bernard. It also quiets down uncontrolled yipping dogs so that we can actually talk to our customers. And gives confidence to my marketers who are afraid of dogs, where they can't always tell if the large dog jumping up at them is friendly or a potential problem.
I've also used it for 'no bark' training on my Chihuahua, who barks incessantly at strangers and at other people/dogs at the dog park.
What a fantastic little device for 10 bucks.

I was very hesitant and not at all convinced when purchasing this item.
One of our three-year-old Yorkie-poos started to bark obnoxiously for no reason non stop every evening. As my husband sat on the couch Tucker would jump at my husband and bark. We had no idea why! It drove us almost insane. All of the dogs needs were met - but he would seem to do this just for attention, and as the weeks went on it became unbearable.
We tried everything! So this little item was my last shot. I SWEAR I only used it once or twice for one evening, and said said "no bark" as I quickly pushed the button. Tuck immediately stopped barking and ran upstairs. The second night (and ever since) I only need to say "no bark" and he clearly gets it. This little thing was a life saver. My house is so much quieter! I still can't believe how quickly this thing worked!

I never review products, but this needs to be told. We had a bark free system for a couple years (until someone sprayed it with water, and it died) and it never really solved our problem (annoying small yipper-dog of neighbor barking every single night from 4:30 to 10p). We decided to buy this gadget just to give it a try b/c it was so cheap... after ONE use, it ended that dog's habit. The dog literally turned-tail and ran back into its house after pressing this gadget one single time! I couldn't believe it. The dog came back out again later that night, zapped it again, and that's all it took. It hasn't come out for its nightly bark-a-thon since. I've taken the battery out of the gadget for storage (conserve the battery, until/if another problem arises), that's how well it's worked. Basically, I paid some company $10 to instantly end my problem. The most worthy purchase I've ever made! I recommend this gadget 100%, it's a gazillion times more effective than the much more expensive bark-free things....Customer Review: Bark Repeller = Junk!!

The range is limited, but it stops the dog next door from barking everytime I go into the back yard. It does not stop chihuahuas from barking at all. After being gone a few weeks, I need to retrain him, but it is small enough to carry in my pocket for that purpose.
