Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of World Cuisine Silicone Nonstick 16-3/8-by-11-5/8-Inch Baking Mat

Customer Review: Works as advertised, great gifts for folks that burn their cookies!
Summary: 5 Stars

This sheet works very well and makes it difficult to burn cookies, pizza, etc. Everything we've baked on it has come out wonderfully. Even a few cookies I forgot about.

Common sense would tell you to slide the pizza off the sheet onto a cutting board before you hack away.

Also, I've seen the sheets at Crate&Barrel and they're made in China as well.. so not sure why people are so vocal about that.

I've bought a few of these as gifts for folks that I know burn their stuff and I don't want to come over and eat burnt biscuits.

Customer Review: World Cuisine Baking Mat
Summary: 4 Stars

I really love these baking mats. They fit right down in my cookie sheets and baking a homemade pizza was no problem. I usually have to use parchment paper, but this will cut down on buying that item.

I also used these mats for my annual chocolate dipping. Instead of wax paper, I lined cookie sheets with the mats and put my hand dipped chocolates there to harden. When I popped them off, they had a neat "checkerboard" design on the bottoms from the mat.

Drawbacks: I'm not crazy about the black border around the edge. Also, when I cut through a hard piece of crust, the pizza cutter scored the baking mat a little. This doesn't affect the usage of the mat, but it's advertised as "can't be cut." What they really mean is the woven fiberglass inside can't be cut, the silicon, however, is vulnerable...

This baking mat is a nice addition to my kitchen. Baked items remove easily, so delicate items do not dstort when removing to cooling rack. Cleanup could not be any easier! Would buy again.

Customer Review: Worth the risk? For me, no.
Summary: 3 Stars

When I recently needed to buy a couple of silicone baking mats, I found myself deciding between these and the Silpat brand, which costs about 35% more. Normally, I would have thought "a slilcone mat is a silicone mat" and just picked the cheaper one--and it terms of how they perform, these mats probably are about equal. But another consideration steered me towards the Silpat, and that was peace of mind.

Silicone is a chemical, and in the case of baking mats, it comes in direct contact with your food at high temperatures for an extended period of time. That's different than silicone spatulas or tongs, where the contact is much more minimal and the temperatures lower. The World Cuisine mats are made in China, and I found myself wondering if I could really trust the "food grade silicone" assurance. Thinking back over recent headlines in China, such as the widespread recalls of baby formula and toys due to the intentional use of toxic substances that actually killed children, I decided it was not worth the risk. This is by no means an indictment of China, overall--and we certainly have our safety issues here in the U.S. from time to time--but I am concerned about a "wild west" manufacturing environment where even the lives of kids can be risked for profits.

The two Silpat mats I bought cost about $10 more, in total, compared to what I would have paid for World Cuisine. For the peace of mind it bought me, that was $10 well spent. Thanks for taking the time to read this review, and I hope you found it helpful in guiding you to a purchase decision.

Customer Review: a definite must have for any baker!
Summary: 5 Stars

I had initially heard of these silicon mats a few years ago, but put off purchasing them for various reasons. A lightning deal here changed my mind and the only thing I regret is not purchasing more than one!!! I have never had such an easy time baking and removing cookes from any pan before. I would recommend this product to any baker. It fits easily in a jelly roll pan can accomodate a dozen large cookies per sheet. I haven't used it for anything other than cookies and rolls at this point, but I do not think there will be a problem with any other types of baked goods. Cleaning was super-easy with some soap and water in the sink. I am planning on purchasing more to make cooking even quicker. Thanks for the lightning deal on this one, Amazon!
