Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of World Cuisine 48297-99 Tri-Blade Plastic Spiral Vegetable Slicer

Customer Review: Good Idea, Poorly Executed
Summary: 2 Stars

I bought this because it looks like it should be easier to use and more sturdy than the Saladacco.

1. Sturdy? No. The plastic is flimsy, and the crank (all plastic) is less solid than the Saladacco crank which at least has a metal arm.

2. Easy to use? No. I could spiralize carrots in the Saladacco but not in this thing.

3. Overly large and bulky? Yes. Twice the size of the Saladacco.

4. Can you get ribbon thin spaghetti-like spirals? No, I couldn't. Using the smallest blade the spirals came out in quarter inch chunks.

5. What's it good for then? It seems to do a good job of purposefully wasting a large portion of the fruit or vegetable you're trying to slice by pushing it through a hole that cuts a half inch core out of the fruit or vegetable.

6. What are you going to do now? Send it back and resign myself to using the Saladacco, which is not a perfect solution, but until someone somewhere designs something better it seems to be the only option.

Customer Review: Good and Bad features
Summary: 3 Stars

For the money this is not a bad spiral slicer considering some list for over 100 dollars. The real sticking point is the fixed forward axle for whatever you are slicing. It consists of a round hollow cutting edge with an approximate 3/8 opening. This simply means whatever you are slicing will lose a 3/8 cylinder from its center. This is accepatable with Cucumbers and Zuchini but does not leave much when slicing Carrots, Raddishes or any other small diameter veggies.
I would not recommend this if you intend to use it for these smaller veggies but for potatoes, Apples and the like it is OK.

Customer Review: Good for the price
Summary: 4 Stars

I share the same opinion about the lack of instructions. I have used it once with zucchini and carrots and I did not know how to use it but I learned as I went. I could not understand why did it leave a huge chunk with a round sick at the end, but it is no biggie since I can chop it up an use it for stock or another salad.

For a plastic gadget is is pretty sturdy and easy to clean.

four stars for the lack of instructions and the flaw of leaving out the chunk of vegetable at the end.

Customer Review: Good product, but very very very sharp!
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought this so that I could complete a raw recipe for spaghetti. The recipe uses raw zucchini instead of spaghetti - and use use this device to cut the zucchini in a spiral. It worked pretty well - and made pretty believable spaghetti. My only negative comment is that the blades are ridiculously sharp. I punctured myself twice out of 4 times of use. I'd recommend the product - but I'd just be very careful.

Customer Review: Great Gadget If You're Lucky Enough to Get It On Sale!
Summary: 4 Stars

I was looking at spiralizers and almost didn't buy this. Although it's much cheaper than the metal versions, it just didn't look very sturdy and I thought the price was too high. It happened to pop up on sale and I got it for a price that I think is much more reasonable. I would not pay full price for this item.

The suction cup feet don't stick at all to my counters. This could be a good or bad thing. Good because they will probably never break (as some reviewers have complained), bad because the device is so lightweight that there is nothing holding it down. I have developed a technique of holding it down with one hand while turning the handle with the other. The problem there is that you need a little forward pressure on the item you're spiralizing too... so it's a little awkward, but I can make it work.

I think this is probably a nicer spiralizer than the other plastic ones out there. Yes, it cores out the veggies when it does it's thing so it's probably not going to work for smaller veggies. I almost exclusively use it for making raw zucchini pasta, so I have never had that trouble. I was saving my zucchini cores for a while thinking I would make a vegetable broth with the scraps... but who am I kidding? I'll never get around to that.

This works good on larger veggies and I'm not terribly concerned about it breaking as long as it's treated with a little care. If I had to replace it, I'd wait for it to go on sale though. Full price is overpriced, in this reviewer's opinion. I would consider it purchasing again at 40% off list price.
