Customer Review: Good-tasting water, a little tricky to refill

I've had this pitcher for a few months now. We have okay tap water here, but water from the Pur pitcher tastes better, and I also like very much that I'm not wasting plastic bottles. I've tried a Brita dispenser before, as well as a Pur faucet-mounted filter, and I prefer this pitcher. The Pur water tastes better to me than the Brita water, and the faucet-mounted filter was always in the way.
I agree with others that the pitcher is difficult to fill and isn't the best design, but I tend to work at things until I find a trick to it. Here's how I fill mine (I'm right-handed):
1. I place my left hand on top of the pitcher, fingers toward the handle.
2. I place my left index finger on one side of the tail of the lid and my left thumb on the other side.
3. I pinch my finger and thumb together on the tail of the lid and raise it a bit.
4. Then, holding the handle with my right hand as if pouring, I press the pad of my right thumb firmly against the raised edge of the tail. I continue pressing forward and up with my thumb, and the lid comes off.
Obviously, it's also tricky to describe in words, but once you do it, you'll get it. Hope it works for you.
Overall, I'm happy with the pitcher. I've thought about getting the dispenser with the spigot, but the pitcher is easy to take in and out of the fridge. The lifespan of the filters seems short (or the indicator is dishonest), but it hasn't been much of a problem.

We are very, very happy with the PUR 2-Stage water pitcher. This was our first purchase for a water filtering product and we are very pleased with the taste of the water. And....no more lugging gallons of water from the store which was becoming a task for us as seniors. I would recommend this product but keep in mind you may have to refill frequently based on your water consumption. We have opted to store the filtered water in some additional pitcher containers so we always have lots of cold filtered water on hand.Customer Review: Great taste, more filling.

The 2-stage filter produces water that tastes so good, I've stopped drinking bottled water (at home, anyway). As a result I find myself filling the pitcher several times a day, much more often than I filled my Brita pitcher.
The functional design of the pitcher, however, could easily be better. Its pour spout is open to the air, while Brita's is covered, leaving the water exposed to dust, as well as to odors in the fridge. It's the equivalent of leaving a bottle of water uncapped all day or longer.
In addition, removing the top in order to add water requires more effort than it should; whoever designed it doesn't seem to have considered that the top must be separated from the filtration chamber. (For that purpose I've developed a technique where I pull the chamber up with my left hand while my right thumb releases the top from it.)
The LED light on top of the lid is activated by pouring, simply by the tilt of the pitcher. It's supposed to measure the amount of water you pour so you know when to get a new filter. If you pour one glass at a time, this will probably give you an accurate measurement. However, if you pour fractions of a glass, or potfulls, or if you tilt the lid when you remove it, it becomes a not very useful gimmick.
Despite the issues with the pitcher, which I hope someone at PUR takes seriously, the quality of the water makes this a product I'd recommend.

For several years, I used Pur's faucet mounted filter. When I moved into a new house, the kitchen sink's faucet wasn't compatible with it, so I looked around for a good pitcher to filter my water instead. I chose Pur because I know that Pur's water tastes good and their filters take out all kinds of junk. I also found that Brita's reviews were mixed. I wish that Pur made a 3-stage filter for their pitchers like they do for their faucet mounts, but I am happy with what I have. I have had this pitcher for over 2 years with no problems. It is a trade off from the faucet mount - I have to wait a couple of minutes for my water to filter, but my water is always nice and cold. I like the LED to remind me when it's time to change the filter, even though I never do it right away. I read on many Brita reviews that little black pieces of carbon from the filter find their way into people's glasses, but I don't have this problem with my Pur pitcher. Very rarely, I find one or 2 little black specs in the bottom of my glass. The biggest con to this product is that when I change the filter, the water tastes bad for the first couple of pitchers. I soak the new filter like the directions say, but I also fill the pitcher, let it filter, then dump it out 2 times each time I put a new filter in. I got the oval pitcher. Now, I admit I have arthritis in my hands but the pitcher is hard for me to pick up and I rarely pour from it without having water on the counter.
It came with the top that is supposed to indicate when it is time to replace the filter. It worked for the first filter replacement. For second filter replacement it refused to reset and always shows it is time to replace the filter.
I am very unhappy and going back to the Brita filter.
