Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Oster 5838 ExpressBake Breadmaker, WhiteCustomer Review: Experienced bread machine user gets sunken bricks Summary: 1 StarsBought this item as a replacement for my worn out breadmaker. Used their recipe for white bread and ended up with a sunken brick with an inch-plus thick crust. On the medium setting, the bread was totally over-cooked. Tried several more times varying the recipe and got the same results. Even tried my tried & true white bread recipe and got the same over-cooked sunken brick. Customer service requested I bring it to an authorized service center with the closest being 2 hours away. Instead I took it back to Kohl's. Purchased the Breadman Corner Bakery and got excellent results on the first loaf. Would not recommend the Oster 5838.
Customer Review: Give me your old . . . Summary: 1 StarsWe own a small winery in California and we used an earlier model of the Oster bread machine to bake fresh bread for our weekend visitors. The ExpressBake model is a HUGE disappointment. The express bake function produces sticky, soggy bread. The longer baked versions ALWAYS have a sunken crust. We have been trying to produce just one perfect loaf for months . . . using the included booklet recipes, and variations on our old Oster recipes, which were always a success. At this point, we consider this machine a waste of money. We are now shopping for the old model on eBay (which we consider a PITA) because it is apparently the only source of the excellent earlier models.
Customer Review: The Exhaustive Bread Machine Search Summary: 4 StarsI searched the internet and miscellaneous shops for the perfect bread machine for my house. For the feature and price range this machine came in first. I really like this bread machine I have had it about a month. I have made about 12 loaves of bread (white, French, herb Italian) and it does it's job rather well. My only qualm is the thickness of the crust (ranging from 1/2 inch to 2 inches) hence the 4 star rating. Normally I just use the 2 pound recipe on the dough setting punch down, separate into two loaves, rise and bake in the oven @ 400 for 30 min. with that said, would I recommend it to others, yes.
Customer Review: Best buy Summary: 5 StarsBest buy I have made in awhile. Makes great bread and I am completely happy with rhis produce
Customer Review: My 2nd Oster Summary: 4 StarsThis is the fourth Oster appliance for me with pretty good luck with all so why change? Plus, hard to beat the price. Same problem with both bread machines, their loaves are just too large but slice them in half length ways and make two slices from one works okay. I like the express bake and the quality of bread is equal to standard bake. I have also stopped at last rise and transferred dough to standard bread pans and give about 30 minute rise and bake in oven for 35 minutes. No need to spend up to $300 when this one will work just as good (or maybe better)
