Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Oster 5838 ExpressBake Breadmaker, WhiteCustomer Review: Worst breadmaker I've ever had! Summary: 1 StarsMy last bread machine was an Oster that cost half what this one did and worked twice as well--even after 8 years and a broken lid! The current model is worthless, except for making pizza dough. So far, I've tried ten bread recipes. Every one produced a too-hard crust, and flour caked at the bottom if I didn't use a spatula to help the early mixing. All but one produced a sunken top--and the one that didn't sink overflowed the pan.
Customer Review: Beware of falling! Summary: 4 StarsThe vibrations when it stirs heavier dough can cause it to "walk" off your counter and fall onto the floor! We always (after the first fall) brace it on our counter top with heavier appliances (wedged against the wall between the big crockpot and the stove). Overall, an excellent bread machine with a wide variety of settings.
Customer Review: What a dud! Summary: 1 StarsAfter 15 (yes, 15) years, my old bread machine (an America's Best brand - no longer made) finially gave up the ghost. I looked at a few new models and after reading the reviews and tips, went with this Oster 5838. What a mistake. I returned it after about 3 weeks. Out of 12 different loaves, only 2 turned out correctly. Most loaves only rose up one side of the pan and came out looking like a blob. 5 of the loaves burnt on the bottom, but were not baked in the middle. The 2 times that I tried the "express bake" option, I ended up with a brick of bread that only rose about 1 1/2 inches. Other reviews informed me that the recipies in the included book required too much yeast, which is true. The recipie book also stated that it was important to have all ingredients at room temp., but this made no difference in the way the machine performed. This machine is very inconsistant and the pan is so cheap, I was afraid I would break it every time I removed it. I am now testing out the Sunbeam. Cross your fingers!
Customer Review: just fine Summary: 5 Starswe bought the 5836 model 2 and a half years ago and have enjoyed excellent whole wheat breads since at the 3hr setting and we always use a plastic spatula in the mixing you may find our measurements helpful cheers!( 5 cups white flour, 2 cups whole wheat flour,1 cup wheat germ,1 tsp yeast,1 tsp salt, 1 tbs brown sugar, 2 ounces butter diced , 2 cups water warmed for 1 min )here's 2 gr8 bread;-)
Customer Review: Love this machine Summary: 5 StarsI have been using my Oster ExpressBake for years and love it. It's quiet and powerful enough to handle whole wheat dough. I did have to order a new pan and paddle because I used the original ones to the point that the nonstick was coming off, but had no unpleasant issues with Oster's customer service. I would highly recommend this machine.
