Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Oster 4716 Egg CookerCustomer Review: Cooks great eggs; unit poor quality Summary: 2 Stars
I had a love-hate relationship with my egg cooker. Loved the way it cooked eggs but it was very difficult to clean. The poaching tray was terrible as it was impossible to clean. Supposedly it is teflon but it is not. I don't know what it is, I just know it's not teflon and egg sticks horribly even with butter. The inside aluminum tray for boiled eggs is difficult to clean and the paint or coating on the base unit started flaking off into the eggs. I used it frequently for about 3 years and threw away the poaching tray. The only way to actually clean it is to put straight vinegar in the base and let it run a cooking cycle. But then your house stinks of vinegar.
Bottom line - great design, very poor materials.
Customer Review: Could be Considered Essential Summary: 5 Stars
I tell you, on the days I use this little device--I lose weight. And that's because I have a couple of hard-boiled eggs around. Furthermore, they are easy to peel, and perfectly cooked, the yolk creamy and not dry. Once a week or so, I put my extra eggs into a sweet little bath of whatever vinegar I have a taste for, whatever spices, and enjoy pickled eggs.
And it's all made possible by this device. I have experienced no problems after several months of use, it is easy to clean, and it makes hard-boiled, soft-boiled, and poached eggs completely easy and completely fool-proof. I clean mine by holding the water well under warm running water (with the electrical end up and above the water flow) and run a brush over it, and any small eggy residue whisks right off. The residue comes from the fact that one pierces the eggs with a tiny built-in --tooth before starting the cycle.
Of course reviewers who said the finished signal should be more audible are right. It makes you pay attention.
Customer Review: Cracked eggs and cooking less than eight eggs. Summary: 3 Stars
This egg cooker is ok. I bought it as a gift and use it almost every day because it uses less water and there is no clean up. The markings for the water levels for egg doneness are for eight eggs and if you only cook two to four eggs they will be VERY undercooked. That's my biggest disappontment because we want the same doneness every time and we have to guess at the water level and so our eggs are never cooked the same. Also this cooker does crack the eggs! It has done cracked many previously uncracked eggs while cooking. Lastly, most likely you will not hear the ultra quiet click when the cooker is done and your eggs will over cook.
Customer Review: DANGER Lid Melted. Location of ON push button BAD Summary: 1 Stars
The ON push button protrudes from the front of the egg cooker. When the house cleaning service cleaned my kitchen, they inadvertently rotated the egg cooker, pushed it against the wall, depressing the ON button and turning it on. As long as the button is pushed in, it will not turn off even though the cooking cycle is over. Several hours later a strong smell of burning plastic permeated the house. Fortunately I was home and found the source before a fire started. One could argue that the cooker should have been unplugged after use but that is not realistic. My view is that the ON button design and location is unacceptable. This design should never have been approved.
I researched for a new egg cooker and decided upon a Maverick EC100. It has a rocker switch that illuminates when on. The switch is well within the outer bounderies of the cooker and would be most difficult to accidently turn on. It turns off automatically and emits electronic beeps to signal the end of cooking. The beeping continues until the rocker switch is returned to the OFF position (the cooker is already off). This is a good design and the cooker performs well.
Customer Review: DO NOT BUY THIS EGG COOKER! Summary: 1 Stars
When I was thinking about buying an egg cooker, I read about how the Oster egg cooker had a design flaw of a plastic lid being placed on a hot metal heating plate. But, there was only one entry that said they had a problem with it. I had no problem with this egg cooker for months. In fact it was a delight to use--the eggs came out good every time. However, just today when I used it, I came back to find that for no obvious reason, the plastic lid was melted on the heating plate. It was so bad, I was not able to pry the plastic lid off. I had to throw the whole unit--cooked eggs and all in the trash. There was no warning from previous use that this was going to happen. So, if you buy this appliance, be prepared at some unsuspecting time in the future to come back and find the plastic lid melted securely onto the heating plate. There was no way to save it.
