Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Oster 4716 Egg CookerCustomer Review: A "green" applicance available in only in white Summary: 5 Stars
After reading the Amazon reviews, we bought the Oster egg coooker--primarily to use for poaching. The product is great. Two observations:
1. The poacher is nearly filled to the brim with extra-large eggs--which is fine, and if one is careful not to spill any eggwhite, cleanup takes seconds. The trick is not to let uncooked eggwhite spill onto the metal rack or the base.
2. (I don't think anyone mentioned this, yet) Over time the unit will easily pay for itself. It uses only 500 watts, and, then, only for a few minutes to boil a minuscule amount of water. A pot of water, brought to a boil on the stovetop, will consume 10 times the amount of energy. Can't comment on the cost of gas, but the cost of running an electric burner to boil a pot of water--before you even start cooking!--is not cheap.
Customer Review: A Good Egg Is Hard To Find Summary: 5 Stars
When my glass topped Oster Eggcooker finally died after many years I ordered another one, got the plastic topped one, used it about a year and bumped it somehow while working in the kitchen, melted the top - - started looking for a glass topped unit by anybody, no one seems to make it the old fashioned way - - got another Oster, it still cools eggs just like I like them over and over again but I make sure to unplug the unit after I am done with it that day - - we have to adapt to new needs and conditions in life all the time.
Customer Review: A Vegetarian Necessity and a Handy Gadget Everyone Summary: 4 Stars
If you're a vegetarian and like me rely on eggs as a quick source of protein when you're too busy or tired of beans this little gadget will make you're life so much easier. Or if you're an omnivore and just want quick easy inexpensive protein.
I love poached eggs, but hate that they are often soggy from the water they are cooked in, not to mention that it takes patience and practice to get it just right. This egg cooker does a fantastic job of poaching eggs. They are perfectly cooked every time with just the right about of runny yolk. TIP: Don't forget to lightly oil the pan. It's not all that non-stick and you're eggs will stick and the pan is difficult to clean if you don't oil it first. I few drops of olive oil rubbed into the pan with a paper towel works great. Use a plastic spoon to lift and slide your poached eggs out.
I particularly like that you can soft, medium, or hard cook your eggs in the shell. No cracked shells, no having to remember, "do I time them before the water boils or after?". This gadget remembers for you. I normally only buy a gadget if it can do more than one thing (thanks Alton Brown) and well this does I can make a multitude of egg dishes with much more ease than before. Worth every penny.
Customer Review: A must have appliance - Egg Cooker - Summary: 5 Stars
I have owned one of the egg cookers for approximately. 4 years. I inherited it when my mother passed. It was an original she purchased probably 15-20 years ago; it actually had a non-polarized plug so it could be even older.
I hated having to buy a new one but it just wore out and the cooking holders needed replacement. Excellent poached eggs, makes cooking Eggs Benedict simple. Make hard boiled eggs quickly for salads and deviled eggs. It is nice to b able to set, and let the machine do the timing.
Customer Review: A perfect hard-boiled egg -- a smelly, dirty process Summary: 3 Stars
Honestly, I've never had any other experience with an egg cooker so I cannot compare it to the other ones on the market, but I did read all of the reviews before I bought this one and it's basically what I expected. I'm more impressed with the eggs than I thought possible, but less impressed with the construction/materials of the machine...
This egg cooker has given me 100% perfect hard-boiled eggs every time (I've used it about 5 times and made 5-6 eggs each time). They really are bizarrely exceptionally good tasting and perfectly cooked. However, I cannot stand to be in the room while they're cooking and I crack the window above the counter where I do it because it smells pretty gross. I have also had the machine leak some water three out of the five times (I now set it on a dish), and it is a PAIN to clean. Forget it ever looking like when you took it out of the box again. I have spent a lot of time trying to clean burned water and exterior eggshell gunk? from the base of the cooker. And the lid and other accouterments are equally as challenging to clean -- they weren't cooperating with a sponge and soap so I stuck them in the dishwasher (even though it says not to) and it didn't hurt the pieces at all (still works great), but it couldn't clean them either! SO I wouldn't put this out on your counter or use it to cook while guests are around.
I have not used the poacher dish yet...so no comment there.
The whole machine seems to be very cheaply made, and I think they can easily do better - and they should. They should also put some type of bell or buzzer or something. You have to set your own timer or keep checking on it. I'd buy them as gifts for everyone since the eggs are so good, if they made some improvements.
5 star eggs - 2.5 star design/convenience
Summary: I wouldn't return this machine for fear any other machine I buy wouldn't give me eggs that were nearly as good (the shell is even a cinch to peel off after!), and I will definitely continue to use it, so technically I recommend this product to you, just be prepared to let the machine look unattractive after it used, and don't put it on top of another electronic (I had it on top of the microwave once and it leaked water).
Hope this helps!
