SINCE I HAVE ARTHRITIS IN MY HANDS IT'S HARD TO OPEN JARS AND THIS LITTLE HANDY GADGET DOES THE TRICK. I LOVE IT.
Customer Review: Little Engine that Could Summary: 3 Stars
Actually, I purchased this little gadget as a replacement for one that someone had given me as a present--but which broke because I asked it to do something beyond its ability. These little openers are fine for opening your average-sized jar--that is, per the instructions, a jar that is not too big, not too small, and not an odd-shape. In fact, watching it go through its gyrations in attempting to pop a lid off is quite entertaining! However, if you try to use it on something with a VERY tight seal (such as home canned tomatoes), the jaws will literally crack under the strain. And that's not a pretty sight to witness! Hopefully, I'll treat this new guy with more respect so he'll last a while.

Had one before and it broke. Had to get another one as I use it everytime I need to open jars as I have arthritis.

Customer Review: Makes Jar Opening a Spectator Sport Summary: 5 Stars
This arrived while my wife is out of town. I tried it on a pickle jar and was entranced! It struggles a bit as a trained actor would, just to buld suspense. Then the lid pops as a climax! Before I was able to come down from my "high", the gadget finished unscrewing the lid and calmly returned to its starting position and shut itself off. WOW! I actually applauded the thing.
I am now trying to keep myself from repeating the performance. I am sure my wife will love the opener, but she may not be pleased to come back to a house full of open jars!
Seriously, although the positive reviews outnumber the negatives by some 3 to 1, there does seem to be a reliability problem. One theme that comes through is that this gadget is not to be used on Mason jars (understandable; these have heavyweight reusable rims}. For these, I strongly recommend the EZ Off Jar Opener undercounter opener which I bought because it had 100% 5-star reviews, including mine. But you have to raise the jar up to it, something my battered old shoulders do not enjoy.
Also, just as with the amazing One Touch II can openerAs Seen On TV! One Touch Can Opener II, you apparently need to make sure the unit is level and has a good shot at properly engaging the lid. And hands off: Let it work by itself! I am also going to make sure it won't fall off the counter if it comes loose.
I bought this for a young friend who has use of only one arm. I tested it first to make sure it could be removed from the package, loaded with batteries, and open a jar all with just one hand. It can. The batteries go in easily if you know to angle them. I just ordered another to give to her. I am keeping this one!
I won't be angry if it has to be replaced annually. She needs something to make her happy once in a while. This is cheaper than going to a movie.
