This is very large, so definitely check the dimensions before you order. Like others, mine does not line up when closed, there is a gap between the 2 bowls and its not aligned correctly so I kind of have to push it up against the wall to keep it closed. And magnets??? If there are magnets keeping this thing closed I am certainly not aware of it or they are not serving their purpose on mine.Customer Review: Mario Batali

The cellar has a real heavy weight feel to it and it's made of good quality wood, it has magnets so you only need to push the lid a little bit and the magnet will do the rest for you, it holds a fairly good amount of salt I personally use it to hold coarse and fine sea salts and I love the way it looks near the stove top.

I went to a store that carried these cellars and noticed that none of them closed properly and the wood was poor quality, they didn't even have the same color!
I bought mine when it first came out so I guess I was lucky that it was perfect, they probably have a cheaper manufacturer now because the ones I saw were nothing like mine.

This is not the first time I am buying a salt cellar. For some reason unknown to me --they wind up MISSING !! I suppose thrown out or dropped out. I'd been eyeing all sorts of salt cellars and " salt pigs " for quite awhile.
I could not resist--when I saw these Mario Batali....and please note..that I do not usually buy these sorts of branded items.
First...let me tell you that I was not happy in the way they were shipped and one arrived damaged...the box was open and no filling to be seen. I do not know whats up with that manner of shipping.
Once I got one of them up and out of the box...I was amazed at the feeling of the weight of it. This was something that I personally need in my kitchen....because light weight stuff--seems to "DISAPPEAR" in my house. I want something with some ""FEEL OF WEIGHT " to it. These have it !!!
Next issue for me when trying to buy these sorts of things are the size of the openings !! I have seen some really cute "Pigs" ---with 2 1/2 inch openings....way too small for my hands. I nneded a large easy to fit my hands in opening-----probably just like MARIO !!!......because this salt cellar fit it perfectly !!!!!!! I couldn't be more happier over that !!!
The wood is super smooth...and your hands just glide up and down the surfaces.
I also like the fact that it has a real cover to it. The cover can be removed--if you just can't stand it...But in my house --covers are exactly what I want. I have pets...step kids and a husband.
I put two types of salt in the one for the table ...Greek Style Salt which has rosemary in it.......and a soft flaked salt for "finishing" .
Personally---I love Mario Batali's salt cellars ---and do highly recomend them.........I hope they to being in stock one day soon --so others may enjoy them as well !!
Customer Review: Nice Warmth For A Stainless Steel Kitchen

This a great item to splurge a little on yourself. I don't like many of the Batali items, but this one caught my eye. It's a nice size, not too big, not too small. It's quite substantial and obviously carved out of a solid wood block. The natural wood is a nice touch to warm up the granite and stainless steel. A few reviews pointed out that the lids did not fit well. Mine was just a bit off too, but I adjusted the hinge pin down just a bit with a few light taps with a small hammer, and now it fits perfectly. The magnets are strong and keep the sections aligned, but easily separated. The item arrived in an empty box, no packaging or wrapping and it was just rolling around in the box. Perhaps this is why the unit gets out of alignment? Someone should rethink the packaging. I keep regular Kosher salt in the larger bottom compartment and I think I will get some of the Hawaiian Black Lava Salt (here on Amazon) for the smaller top compartment. It's a fun item to have next to the stove and if your monogram is "M" that makes it just a bit more special for you!
