Certainly takes the place of a food processor I was eying but had no counter space for. I rarely use one anyway. But this is my first mandoline and I like it! I was making salad for a party and this fit the bill Cukes, carrots, radishes, done in a flash! I am going to make potato au gratin a big dish for the next party. And yeah this will be a joy to use. Watch your fingers! Use the guard. Also You tube features this item to demonstrate how to use a mandoline very informative for a novice like myself. I have hand washed and can't speak on how it will fare in the dishwasher.
