We first purchased the Lightwedge Original about three years ago, are still using it nightly, and have since purchased another one for ourselves (my husband and I kept fighting over it). Because we are so pleased with the high quality of this product and the light with which it illuminates our books, we have also purchased the paperback-sized edition. To be honest, we have never used the lens care kit (we have not bought one yet), nor have we needed to - we just keep them in their cases or right in our current book when not using them. The first one we purchased is still providing the clean, clear light it did three years ago for reading in bed or in the car. We take them wherever we go (when we are travelling, we don't even bring the soft covers, because we just store them in the current book we are reading) and every friend and relative we visit wants one! Thus, we give them frequently as "thank-you for having us" gifts as well as Christmas and birthday gifts. And as I said before, everyone loves them!Customer Review: Excellent book light...

This is certainly not the cheapest or most universal book lihgt and for travelers it might be a bit bulky and sensible to scratches, but for those who like to read in bed and do not want to disturb others, this is the best solution I have found. I like the LightWedge Original LED Book Light a little better than the paperback version that I own as well, since I feel it lights the page more evenly.Customer Review: Excellent product for avid readers

I have owned the LightWedge book light for approximately one year. It is wonderful for people who want to read and perhaps not disturb anyone else. It is a quality product, made very well. I especially benefit from the product due to the fact that I have vision in only one eye as a result of surgery for a brain aneurysm. Keep in mind though, that it is not the conventional book light in the sense that it is not the "clip on" type book light. Each time you turn the page, you have to move the booklight to the next page. At first, I did not think I would want to be bothered with that, but now, it is second nature and not at all a problem. As I stated before, it is a quality product, but must be treated with great care to avoid scratching. After one year, mine has minor scratches that do not obstruct my ability to read at all. I would however recommend that the cleaning kit be used on it occasionally which is a seperate purchase, but lasts a very long time. I am still on my first kit. When not in use, it is an excellent idea to store it inside of a hardcover book to ensure that it stays clean. There is also a case available if needed. I really take care of mine and use it every day. I highly recommend this product. I have changed the batteries once in a year, which by the way is very easy. If you are a book lover, and particularly enjoy reading at night, go for this product. You won't be disappointed. I am thinking about purchasing the paperback edition next. Problem 1: Scratched in ten minutes flat, while sitting inside a book. It was scratched by paper.
Problem 2: LEDs are not diffuse enough. You get a neat interferometry pattern on your page. (You did that experiment in high school, didn't you?)
Problem 3: Awkward to flip pages.
I liked the idea. I just wish it was designed by somebody who actually used it.

I read books at night, frequently, so I purchased this product so I wouldn't disturb my wife. This light source is simple in design: tiny LED lamps illuminate a thin piece of plastic (working similar to a fiberoptic lamp Lumisource LS-FO SPRAY Fiber Optic Spray). It is about the dimensions of a full sized book and the black handle which houses the battery/light source is somewhat bulky. A small button toggles the light intensity from low to dim to off.
USE
Place the item on the page that you want to read, push the button to the light intensity that you desire (allow your eyes to adjust to the darkness, which may take a minute or more), and flip the item to the other page to read. As you turn the page, you will need to take the item out, and place it back into the book.
In concept, this product is ideal. You have a light source that is limited to the pages that you are viewing. However, even on the highest intensity (let's call it dim and dimmer), the light is still somewhat low. What can you read with this item? Books that have high contrast paper (glossy pages are most ideal since the reflective proper of the paper allows for better view). Conventional novels are a bit more difficult to read. Magazines are impossible unless you read on your stomach with the magazine placed on the bed. Furthermore, pictures are difficult to see, at best.
DURABILITY
Like any screen on a laptop, I placed a SCREEN PROTECTOR on my lightwedge to prevent scratches. Any scratch with transmit uneven light (more than usual).
Given that LEDs have very little power requirements, I have had the same batteries in the unit for the past 3 years, and it is still running.
DESIGN RECOMMENDATIONS
More LED bulbs along the 'spine' of the handle would improve the light intensity.
A thinner, scratch resistant plastic with a lighter handle would be a marked improvement.
VERDICT
Knowing the limitations and tendency for scratches, it is an innovative product that still has good uses. You will need to try this product for yourself, before you can decide if it works for you.
