Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Lello 4090 Gelato Pro Quart Ice Cream MakerCustomer Review: Great...at first... Summary: 3 Stars
3 stars for refrigeration failure, 5 stars for when it's actually working.
Got it two weeks before Father's Day. Churned out 16+ 1-2 quart batches in four weeks...chocolate, nutella, grape-nut, fig, vanilla, strawberry, banana, orange-cream, nutella and nutella.
The first batches were great, real creamy, very little ice crystals. The last 4 batches took 50-70 minutes causing a lot of over-run (air) and ice crystals...blech.
I REALLY did my research on this purchase and knew other buyers had had this problem. But I saw the other refrigerated ice cream makers also had similar problems. There are no 2qt makers for this price though. The only one that might be an improvement would be the $1100 Pola 5030, with it's guaranteed 20 minute freeze time. The Cuisinart is too noisy for me.Cuisinart ICE-50BC Supreme Ice Cream Maker
The removable bucket is awesome. The add-in chute is small and sometimes difficult to work around. Cleans well. Small footprint.
So I decided to send it back to Amazon and get a replacement. I will let you know how it works.
If it fails I will save up and get the Pola Lello Musso Pola 5030 Desert Maker
Customer Review: Lello Gelato Pro 4090 Summary: 5 Stars
Takes longer than they say to freeze which is not an issue for me. About the same as a non-compressor old fashioned style one. Not having to mess with ice/snow and salt is priceless. Cleanup is a breeze and the ice cream comes out perfect everytime with a good recipie. A little noisier than I expected but not excessive. Definately a great product for the money,
Customer Review: Mine stopped working! Summary: 2 Stars
I bought this unit about 18 months ago and was initially pleased with it. It replaced a similar unit from this company which I had for years before it failed. My new unit wasn't used often over the time I had it. Recently I attempted to make ice cream and it wouldn't freeze. The compressor must be broken and I was told by the company when I called to have it fixed that it would be almost as expensive to fix as it would be to replace. The spokesman seemed very surprised to learn that the unit had broken in such a short time. To quote him, "It usually takes the compressor longer to fail!" Thanks, I wouldn't reocmment this brand to anyone.
Customer Review: No mess ice cream Summary: 4 Stars
With room temperature ingredients, it takes about 45 minutes to make ice cream or Italian Ice. Small crumbled cookies or candy bits of reeses pieces, rollos etc can be added through the port for adding such ben and jerry ingredients. The bits are distributed evenly throughout the finished product when they are added near the conclusion of the of the process.
It would be nice if the machine had a variable speed beater to control the air in the final product, but that is probably expecting too much from a machine designed for home use.
The machine seems to be very well made and arrived well before promised delivery date.
Customer Review: Not bad, but some quirks Summary: 2 Stars
This machine includes a pretty good compressor in it, which places it head and shoulders above some of those "freeze the ceramic jar" ice cream makers. Likewise it turns out thicker gelato consistently and in a short time-frame. The only difficulty I've had with it is seating the motor on the churning blade properly--it's necessary either to put a weight on the blade motor of the machine, since it doesn't snap into place. Otherwise you've got to fiddle with it until it works properly. I'm happy with the gelato, but the price-point is pretty high for something with a design flaw like that.
