This was a present and on arrival did not work. We called the company and they instantly sent a replacement. The slip to return the old one did not even arrive til long after our first batch of ice cream was made. I bought this to make ice cream at home. B/c my son is on a gluten and casein free diet, it is too expesnive to go to the health food store and buy him ice cream everytime he wants some. This machine is great!! I can put the ingredients in, we can sit down to eat; once our meal is done the ice cream is ready!! It tastes so much better than store bought!! The book is great but I also purchase a couple other books when I bought this. I kept only one b/c it had recipes for GFCF icecream in it.Customer Review: Gelato Junior

I am relatively happy with the machine, although I had to call the company to supplement the inadequate instructions supplied with the ice cream machine to operate it properly and produce a good product. It does produce a creamier product as compared to the freezer gel type ice cream makers, since it has a stronger motor and can churn longer before the ice cream base is semi-frozen. It is also more convenient to use since it requires no prefreezing. The base does not have to be cold to make ice cream, just at room temperature. It is also relatively quiet and the weight of the machine is still light enough (35 pounds) that I can lift it if I have to. The price was right as well. On the down side it takes more time to freeze the base to the right consistancy, upwards of 1 hour, not the 20 to 30 minutes the instructions say or the company led me to believe. Although I was told absolutely not to prechill the bowl in the machine and to not run it until the blade stalls, I find that I get a better product it I let the machine run till the blade becomes stuck in the mix. Also it can only freeze 2 cups of ice cream base and a little more for sorbet at a time since the coolant only reaches to the top of the blade. Since the bowl in my machine did not come with a fill line and this important peice of information was not in the instructions, I had to call the company to learn this. It made all the difference in the quality of the finished product not to overfill the bowl. I absolutely love the new Gelato Junior that I recently purchased from Amazon.com. I have made countless quarts of ice cream without all the mess of ice and rock salt. Because it makes around a quart each time, I feel free to experiment with different flavors. I even made avocado ice cream. The only draw-back to the machine is that it takes around 60 - 70 minutes to make the ice cream instead of the 25 - 30 as advertised. I would recommend it to anyone who loves ice cream. It has been especially good for me because I am lactose intolerant. I buy lactose-free milk to make the ice cream, and I have been able to get back to the luxury of having one of my favorite desserts.
