The first lamp I got had a short circuit and had to return it.
I got the second lamp and I got passed the plug it in stage, The lava was held in place by a spring like ring of metal inside the lamp which I had to manipulate to fall into place at the bottom of the lamp before the lava would move at all, once it was in place correctly the lamp has preformed quite well. It takes about 15 to 30 minutes to get full motion and like all lamps shouldn't be run more than 4 hours to prevent explosions from occurring and having your own volcano in your house.

I have made some additions to add clarity to some issues with these lamps.
1. Emulsification - I had wondered why so many comments were about the cloudiness of the lamps they had received. One possible explanation is that since these lamps use wax and water (with or without color) the can easily mix and blend under certain conditions, one example of this is water and oil where the two would not combine together. Although it's very possible to change certain variables such as temperature or adding in some agent which allows a connection to form, in much the fashion as glue, to make the two to undergo a blending. There is no black box warning which says if you heat the globe enough and have enough movement where the liquid starts sloshing and mixing your globe may end up very cloudy due to the wax and water blending. There is no easy fix for this problem you would need to find a way to separate the now mixed compounds from each other. Since, you should never open the globe as it would release the pressure needed inside the globe to maintain the movement of the wax, best to just get another lamp...with the hopes you won't be buying them in the hot months of the year or in hot humid climates such as Florida.
2. Overheating - It's easy to do and not so easy to clean up the aftermath. The box will tell you in fine print to not run it more than 8 hours at a time, which is far too long in itself (this is more of the time it takes for the water to boil.) If the lamp were to reach the boiling point of water (212 degrees Fahrenheit, 100 Celsius, ~373.15 kelvin) it might already be too late for the lamp the amount of pressure on the glass and bottle cap would be start to build to a maximum and you would either get an explosion through the cap or the glass would rupture, I wouldn't want to clean up that mess. This lamp is not and should not be used as real light source as leaving it unattended in any fashion might result in any form of catastrophe, avoid it by using it as a decorative piece as it is meant to be used.
