I was really cautious about buying one of these because of so many bad reviews, but I'm glad to find out that it works perfectly! It is very simple to put together and easy to use. The directions state that it is to be used with a swift, but I don't have one of those and you really don't need one sometimes.
I wanted this mainly to wind my store bought, machine wound skiens into nice little center pull cakes. I hate store wound skiens because they basically colapse on themself after you use about half of it. That being said, I started with a skien that was about half gone and fed it through the guide rod and attached it to the winder and started winding, using my right hand to turn the crank and my left hand to apply tension on the yarn (like a swift would do). My left hand would also catch any yarn "burps" or tangles that happen at the end of a machine wound skien. I was thrilled at the result! The cake slides off easily and I used a small crochet hook to tuck in the end strand.
The details say that it will wind up to 4 oz of yarn, but it will actually do more than that. I was able to wind an entire 7oz skien of Hobby Lobby's brand of "I Love this Yarn" worsted weight (355 yds) onto it. The cake ended up being about the size of a triple roll of toilet paper. The clamp will fit on a edge up to 1.4" wide.
The winder has a 1:4 turn ratio (so when you turn the handle once, the cone turns 4 times), so it allows for quick winding. I'm sure more pricier models have a higher ratio, but this one is good deal for your money and it won't break the bank. The parts are mostly plastic, but there is some metal. I plan to keep it stored in the box it came in when not in use because I feel it will be more prone to damage just sitting out attached to something. I'm very satisfied with this purchase and now I'm going to go finish winding yarn!
