Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Kyocera CP-20 RD Perfect Peeler, Red

Customer Review: Ceramic Peeler
Summary: 5 Stars

I do love this peeler. It seems like such a small thing, almost insignificant in your kitchen, until you're peeling a ton of apples for pie, or 5# of potatoes for Thanksgiving dinner. The blade on this item is nice and sharp and really glides across whatever you're peeling. Plus the head pivots to 3 different positions to accommodate how you prefer to hold a peeler. I gave one of these as a gift to my sister who has arthritic hands and, although she doesn't cook a lot any more, she does like having this great little tool.

Customer Review: Excellent Peeler but the blade mount could be sturdier
Summary: 4 Stars

We received this peeler as a wedding gift and it worked great for about a year and a half. Unfortunately, the little tabs that join the blade assembly to the body seem to be the weak point in the design and the blade assembly broke free from the peeler. The peeler is somewhat pricey so, rather than replace it, we went back to using a no-name peeler. After a few days of using the no-name peeler we realized how much the Kyocera peeler had spoiled us for the time that we had it. We broke down and ordered a new Kyocera peeler from Amazon. I have read that Kyocera are very good about replacing those peelers where the blade has broken off but, unfortunately, we threw our broken peeler away after a failed attempt at gluing it back together a few days before I read those reviews.

The fact that we would buy a second $17 peeler after our first one broke inside of two years is a testament to the usefulness of this tool. I have nothing but good things to say about its utility in the kitchen.

Pros:
Peels well, no binding
Blade extremely sharp (and stays that way)
Rotating head
Fits well in the hand

Cons:
Plastic Tabs that hold blade on are too small

Aside from the tiny tabs that hold the blade on it is well made and an excellent peeler. I would strongly recommend it and intend to buy another for my parents shortly.

Customer Review: Extremely sharp, but a bit fragile
Summary: 3 Stars

I actually bought this replace my friend's whose I broke by applying a bit too much pressure. The ceramic blade is encased in a plastic frame with 2 small plastic pins that connect it to the main arm. This is a design flaw, as these pins can break easily. Additionally, the frame adds just a little more time required for cleaning.

Having said all that, I probably didn't need to be pressing so hard. So you could also blame this on user error.

In terms of being a peeler, it will greatly surpass anything else you've used in terms of sharpness.

Update (1/13/2011) - I ended up breaking mine, but I was able to fix it. Dropping to 3 stars, as with all of the other negative reviews, I'm not so sure it's user error. In case you're interested, here are the details of my kludgey fix:
1. Drill a hole into the black frame with a very small diameter drill (smaller than the hole of the red frame.) Be extremely careful not to drill in too far, as the ceramic would undoubtedly break easily.
2. Use a small screw to replace the pin.
3. I didn't have an exact fit, so I had to snip off the end of the screw.

It's still working after 3 years...

Customer Review: Fabulous Peeler!
Summary: 5 Stars

I use this peeler every single day to peel fresh fruit for my smoothie. I love mine so much I bought 3 more, one for every woman in my family. I can peel mangoes in one long strip. Ripe kiwis - no problem! The peels might be a little too thin on carrots and potatoes - it's hard to tell where you've peeled a carrot. But it's actually fun to peel them, so no worries.

I like the rotating head. For fruit I keep the blade facing me at a 45-degree angle, so I end up using the peeler like an effortless paring knife. But for carrots and potatoes I turn it so the blade's facing straight away like a regular peeler.

The only thing I can think of that would improve this peeler would be if, at the end of the handle, there was a hook or something to dig out blemishes or potato eyes. If it had that, I'd agree it's the Perfect Peeler. But even without it, this is definitely my peeler of choice. It's pretty expensive, but if you're going to use it often, I think it's worth it. And hey, it's not like you're going to buy them often. I've had mine for over a year, and there's no reason to think I'll ever have to replace it.

Customer Review: Great Example of Ceramic Superiority
Summary: 4 Stars

The benefits to this peeler over a standard peeler are two-fold: superior blade and ergonomic design.

Pros:
Adjustable head angle -- this is great for doing large projects and switching between hands.
Ergonomic design -- in addition to the adjustable head, the soft grip and thumb-crook at the neck make this peeler easy on the hands
Ceramic blade -- I have always been a fan of ceramic blades (despite their purported fragility). This one does not disappoint and I have yet to break it.

Cons:
No potato eye remover
Dialing action of the adjustable head feels as thought it *may* wear down. It hasn't, and I haven't heard anyone else complain of this, I'm just sayin.
Red is the only color available. It doesn't clash with my kitchen, but I could see some people being disappointed in this
