Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Koolatron - Koolatron Krusader CoolerCustomer Review: Great cooler! Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this cooler to use in the car while moving out of state. It was really handy to have. Very roomy and light weight (empty). It keeps drinks/food cold, but not as chilled as I had expected. I suppose this probably has to do with how much stuff you put into it. Overall, I was quite satisfied.
Customer Review: I am an OTR Driver and need a good/cold cooler without the prob. with ice Summary: 1 Stars
This is the one in most truck stops, and therefore thought it was the one to buy...but now that I've bought a 2ND one that has lasted 3-5 months then starts cooling less and then just creates hot air inside and out, I'll never buy another Coleman thermoelectric. The motor starts making noise interrupting sleep and peace of mind, etc.
After talking to many seasoned drivers they say they've gone Thur the same thing and have educated themselves and found that the definitive cooler of this type is the "Koolatron" brand. They are sold here. Ck'em out. I'm going for the P-95 a 45Qt. I know of one driver who has had his for 2yrs. and still working fine. That's good enough for me to win me over.
Also, I am seeing them in Pilot trk. stops.
Coleman, says you have to cut the cord remove the lid and motor and mail them back to Colemand for the warranty
be valid. Then, after 6 weeks you'll get a refund.
Customer Review: Needs a little help Summary: 3 Stars
We bought the cooler to keep cold or frozen food cold when we were either shopping or driving around. It had a hard time staying cold in the warm weather if the cooler had to sit in the car. When we added a couple of frozen freezettes then the cooler stayed cold, below 40 degrees.
Customer Review: Not as good as it could be Summary: 2 Stars
I used to own a Koolatron cooler. I used to think it was the best thing I'd ever run across. But I have changed my mind.
Reason #1: It can only cool, at best, to 40 to 45 degrees F below the ambient temperature. (Read the Koolatron info for yourself) That means if it's 95 outside the box, the coldest it will get inside the box is 50 degrees F. Not too chilly if you you were hoping for a (n)ice COLD drink. Also not as low a temperature as is recommended for food storage safety. Daily temps of 90 to 95 are commonplace in many areas in the summer. If you have warm stuff you want to chill, it takes a long time to get the temp down.
Reason #2: It is a battery hog. It will draw your auto battery down an uncomfortable amount over a days running, unless the battery is receiving a charge as in, the engine is running. So I found it not too useful for a camping trip of longer duration than just a single day or a day trip, where (a) there was no AC power available, and (b) you didn't want to drive or run the engine every day.
I'd say it works well enough to be used as a transportation cooler. Load it at point A, unload or use the contents up shortly at point B.
I have been much happier with the Extreme type of cooler offered by Coleman and others. These have extra thick walls. If used with frozen bottles of water there's no melted ice (water) to deal with. Maybe a little condensation, but that's all. And they keep my stuff COLD for several days at a stretch.
Just my opinion.
Customer Review: Owner operator Trucker Summary: 5 Stars
After owning several other brands of 12 volt coolers, I found a winner with this one. The Coleman PowerChill seemed to ice up , not cool very well and the motors and fans just would not last very long. The P-85 Koolatron Krusader gets cooler and stays cold longer. Of course it is in my truck sleeper and in an insulated cabinet where the ambient temps rarely reach above 75 deg. I did shorten the cord to a minimum length to help keep the plug cooler and ease the current draw. (longer cord = more current draw = more heat)
