This part is an improvement over the 10 or so year old mixer couplers, but it still fails after a few years (but it did last longer than the original). My point is, order 2 or 3 as shipping for me was the same on 1 as it was on 3.
I agree, if you are careful, unplug the blender and you can jam the motor with a small screw driver and use a pair of adjustable pliers to take off the coupler. This is REVERSE threaded, clockwise to loosen.
I decided to fix my Miserable KitchenAid, after reading dozens of other blender reviews and finding them to be even worse. I believe this rubber coupling serves to make the blender quieter, so the design trade off is shorter life for quieter operation. The blender should really come with a tool and a replacement one of these since they are inexpensive.
