Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Keurig My K-Cup Reusable Coffee FilterCustomer Review: Add two washers Summary: 4 Stars
This product, along with four boxes of KCups, came with my Keurig machine. As others have stated, be careful of overpaying for this product. I also noted a lot of water bypasses the coffee so I added two tiny washers to the top inlet of the filter and this solved the water overflow problem. In the morning I cannot function without my first cup of coffee so I do use a disposable KCup to get going and switch to using this reusable filter for the remainder of the day. I am surprised that the little washers have not fallen out! It is more work to rinse out the coffee filter after each use, so yes the disposable cups are more convenient, but this product is more economical and allows coffee nuts to choose their own coffee.
Customer Review: Adjust your machine's washer and buy 2 Summary: 4 Stars
When I first bought the reusable filter I had problems with leakage. After some online research I learned that the rubber washer that surrounds the blade which would normally pierce the TOP of the K-cup needed to be wiggled down a bit in order to properly seal with the reusable filter. After making the adjustment my problem was eliminated. Sometimes you will get a few more grounds in the bottom of your coffee cup but the coffee is still very good and you can sleep better at night knowing that you aren't leaving a huge carbon footprint with all of those spent K-cups. I have 2 now, and may purchase a 3rd so that I don't have to be bothered with rinsing and re-filling the reusable filter cup during my already rushed mornings.
Customer Review: Affordable Alternative Summary: 4 Stars
The Reusable K-Cup is a very good, affordable alternative to the one-cup disposable K-Cups. We enjoy it because we can use our favorite coffees that aren't available in K-Cups, like some Starbucks brews or other gourmet coffees we enjoy! Ours came with our Cuisinart machine made for Keurig and has been invaluable thus far! No issues with breaking like others have mentioned... and we use it often!
Tip: The Reusable K-Cup doesn't usually brew as strong of a cup as the disposables. But, we buy coffee beans to grind and find that grinding the coffee superfine (espresso setting) and filling the K-Cup with that brews a satisfying cup!
Customer Review: Affords flexibility with my Keurig Summary: 4 Stars
I got this as part of a Keurig B60 order through an Amazon competitor (Costco). I have used it a few times to brew coffee (using up my leftover rot-gut Folgers as I make the switch to the good stuff), but this is how I use it the most:
After we do our coffee in the morning, I pop out the K cup holder and pop in the reusuable My K Cup. I can then brew teas throughout the day using tea bags by simply placing them into the My K Cup, sans filter (which I keep pristine for fresh-ground coffee beans). I drink a lot of herb teas during the day, and while the Keurig brews them too quickly to totally extract all the goodness, that's the way I like my medicinal herb teas: a little on the weak side. Of course, I could run the hot water through the Keurig and then steep the tea bags. But putting the My K Cup into the machine gives me a lot of different options. I mean, shoot, I can run out a cup of hot water and make homemade soup with my dehydrated cooked noodles or rice and dehydrated veggies! So I'm more likely to use up my store....
At night, before I go to bed, I pop out the My K Cup and pop in the regular K cup holder, make sure the Keurig's water reservoir is filled up with filtered water from my Big Berkey (conveniently located right there at the sink), and go off to a blissful sleep, knowing my DH can stagger in there in the morning and make his coffee with no problems. And not wake me up!
It really is bliss...BLISS!
Customer Review: After a few modifications - I LOVE IT! Summary: 5 Stars
This is the first review I have ever written at Amazon. I use Amazon reviews all the time to help me decide whether or not to purchase something...but always seem to forget to go back and make a review after a purchase...but I just had to this time!
I got my Keurig a few days ago and I bought the reusable coffee filter as well. I have seen the Keurigs for quite some time but thought that was an expensive way to enjoy a single cup of coffee...then I saw the filter and thought I love that concept. I am the only one in my house that drinks coffee and I have a small 5 cup coffee maker that 1/2 of the pot gets thrown down the drain every day after I have my morning coffee. In fact there are times when I would love to have an afternoon cup but feel it is wasting money to make a whole pot for my afternoon cup (and I have tried doing half pots and it just doesn't come out the same!)
So I thought this was genius! I get to enjoy my favorite coffee one cup at a time whenever I want.
So I got it home and the first night had one of the k-cups that came with the machine...very very very good coffee!! Loved it! Couldn't wait until the next morning to try it out with my favoite coffee right now - Dunkin Donuts Pumpkin Spice!
Well I set up my little filter, put my coffee in and was so very disappointed when I went to take a drink and it tasted just a tad over hot water - YUCK!! (and I am not a strong coffee drinker...I like mild coffees...but this was colored water!! - YUCK!!)
So I got on Amazon and started reading the reviews and doing research. I found I was not the only one...many people have the same problem and I read all the different solutions. The solution that made the most sense was the ones that said they got a coffee grinder and ground their coffee very fine. This made the most sense. I did some research and found out the finer the grounds the stronger the brew...espresso grounds are very fine! (In fact when I bought my grinder today it noted finer grounds for a stronger brew.)
I also opened one of the k-cups and inspected how they were made.
And here is what I finally came up with that gave me a very nice cup of coffee - probably better than it is from my coffee pot :-)
1) Re-grind your favorite coffee to a fine ground
2) put the plastic portion of a used k-cup (needs to be used because it has to have the hole punched out of the bottom) in the bottom of the my k-cup filter
2) put the mesh filter in next
3) put a cut down paper filter inside the mesh filter (not only helps the brewing of the coffee but also makes clean up easier - you just have to lift out the paper filter!)
4) fill the filter 3/4 full of the fine ground coffee (don't go any higher...just makes a mess)
Voila! A wonderful cup of coffee.
It is just a shame that you have to do all this to figure this out!! It seems that Keurig would get a better design so we wouldn't have to do this! But I will take these few steps because it is a lot cheaper than buying the k-cups!
