Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Keurig My K-Cup Reusable Coffee FilterCustomer Review: A Homeschool Experiment For The Perfect Cup... Summary: 4 Stars
My 10 year old, Lil, and I realized that the k-cups that came with our Keurig where almost gone, so we decided to pull out the My K-Cup that came with it. However, there were no directions within the box, so the experiment began. Not wanting to open one of the last few from the presious variety pack, we checked out what the grounds looked like from one already brewed. They definitely seemed packed in with a rather fine grind.
We started by grinding our beans in the old trusty $14.95 superstore special grinder for a slow count of 15 & then adding 2tbsp of the grounds to the filter, always brushing off the top with our hands before screw-on. This resulted in light brown water, eventually turning clear, as we watched it come out. Pretty weak looking for my standards. When we checked out the grounds after pulling the whole thing apart, we noticed that the spray from the water went right through the grounds and out the filter as well as a decent size space at the top of the filter.
Rinse. Try Again.
Attempt two was a slow count to 20 with 2˝tbsp (just for reference, 1 tbsp = 3 tsp). The thought was to make it harder for the water to push through with a finer grind for a denser consistency and more grounds to fill the space. This time our brown water was darker, but excess water poured over the top, causing splashes from from the over flow along with a nice mess. However, the grounds left in the filter looked closer to what we wanted. The water did not pierce all the way through and they were packed to the top. We still wanted it to be a little denser, but not quite as full.
Rinse. Try Again.
We made one more attempt, this time with great success. We ground the bean at a slow count to 30 and added 2 1/3 tbsp. Completely perfect: Wonderfully dark brown liquid with absolutely no flow over, very smooth & not bitter ( which, by the way, is caused from two things: 1- burnt beans 2- too much water or too weak. Yup, that's right, if your coffee is bitter it's because your not adding enough grounds. Most packages read 1 tbsp for one cup of coffee. But, a coffee cup, as well as a tea cup, used to be much smaller than what we know today. Only 6oz is one cup of coffee (2oz=1 shot, 4oz=2 shots, 6oz=1 cup)). So Lil and I finally enjoyed a cup together, which ultimately was to goal of our morning.
A RECAP: Very fine grind, which turns out to be about 35 seconds with a cheap, generic grinder. Add 2tbsp & 1tsp to the filter; do not pack.
I hope this has helped and that you enjoy your My K-Cup and Keurig as much as my family.
Happy Brewing!

Customer Review: A MUST HAVE, its better, cheaper and helps you go green Summary: 5 Stars
Face it the Keurig might be a great machine, fast and effeicent perfect for the guy or girl on the run. But it doesn't make a great cup off coffee, even with the best k-cup coffee brand available, it might be good but in no means great. People buy it because it is quick, better and cheaper than Dunkin Donuts. Its definately not better or cheaper than brewing regular coffee the old fashion way, that's where you get great coffee. Plus k-cups are close to 20x's more expensive, don't believe do the math.
That is unless you use this filter. You chose the coffee, it might take just a bit more time becuase you have to rinse the filter when your done but it is better tasting than any K-cup plus it is green, no empty k-cup to pollute a landfill.
Buy this filter and save yourself a lot of money. I have heard others calling this thing cheap, I have been using mine for over a year and so has my wife, it makes about four cups a day, as well as brews loose tea, 100x's better than the k-cup brands. This this is just as solid as it was the day I bought it.
Makes a good product even better. A must have!
Customer Review: A Must Have! Summary: 5 Stars
If you're new to the Keurig machine, you're likely enjoying the convenience and selection that comes with purchasing K-Cups. After the first few months or so you'll start loathing the trips to the store, feeling like you've been "had" by yet another kitchen gadget that ties you in to buying the special "thing" to keep it running. The re-usable K-Cup solves this problem AND brews up a better cup of coffee than any pre-packaged K-Cup. It does take some commitment; you have to clean the filter after (or before) each use. (No different than a traditional coffee maker, really) All in all, I strongly recommend this product. Well worth the $15.
Customer Review: A Necessity Summary: 4 Stars
If you own a Keurig coffee machine for anything but a workplace than you need to own a "My K-Cup" filter. Honestly the machine itself should come with one. Its also a bit pricey for a little plastic sleeve and a mesh filter but you will save money versus K-Cups in the long run. Works pretty good though the coffee comes out a little light. I found if you tap the filter on the counter to "pack" the coffee it comes out a little darker. I was able to make a great cup of Dunkins using this method.
Customer Review: A Nice Backup, But Summary: 3 Stars
This thing does what it says it will. As others have said, it is sort of flimsy. I used gourmet, ground coffee (dark) as my test coffee. It honestly tasted pretty watered down, and I would say the results are unspectacular compared to a Mr. Coffee or even the Green Mountain Dark Magic or Double Black Diamond -- my k-cup du jour.
If you like strong coffee and don't want to use k-cups, then get a regular brewer. The effort of tossing a filter on a regular machine is about the same and you can control the strength of the coffee better than this. Filling the whole thing resulted in a relatively weak coffee. My parents may enjoy the strength of it, but for anybody looking for a strong cup of inspiration this simply will lead to disappointment.
Let me also go on a tangent to mention that recycling -- except for cans -- generally is a net loss to the environment due to transportation, sorting, energy, and re-production costs. Landfills account for less than 1% of the total land mass of the U.S. have stringent laws about sealing. Furthermore, they often generate a great deal of gas which is used as alternative energy.
Buy this "eco-friendly" product if you want to feel good about yourself, but don't think you are doing much for the environment.
