Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Kershaw Taskmaster ShearsCustomer Review: FINALLY GREAT KITCHEN SHEARS! Summary: 5 Stars
I've purchased countless kitchen shears over the years...all prices, brands, you name it. I just got to the point where I figured that kitchen shears were meant to be disposable when I read a recommendation in Cooks Illustrated for kitchen shears. I checked them out on Amazon, discovered that Kershaw Taskmaster Shears were the same as the recommended ones and everyone seemed to really like them. When they were delivered I was immediately impressed...these are great shears! They come apart for cleaning, they are stainless steel, dishwasher safe, have a lifetime guarantee, can be used by either right or left handed people, have a bone notch, bottle openers, feel really sturdy and cut through chicken like butter. I'M IN LOVE!
Customer Review: GREAT SHEARS Summary: 5 Stars
I bought these shears to go with my Shun knives. The other reviewers are correct when they say these are actually Kershaw shears. Kershaw is part of Kai, USA, as is Shun. At any rate these are great shears, made in Japan, wonderfully sharp out of the package, very ergonomic and have all the bells and whistles one would expect from a great pair of shears. I like them more than my messermeister's, they are larger and have more mechanical advantage when cutting bone. Cutting fins off of fish has just gotten a lot easier and butterflying a chicken is a snap. Highly recommend these shears.
Customer Review: Good Heavy Duty Shears Summary: 4 Stars
I bought these to use in the barn and tool room, also around the farm. They are sturdy, have really handy notches. If one is cutting a hard material, they can hurt the hand a bit, yet in all fairness I have only had one pair better for comfort and they are not produced anymore. I've trimmed manes, cut wire fencing and pulled nails with these shears. Over all a great heavy duty shear.
Customer Review: Good Shears Summary: 4 Stars
These shears do the job. I basically wanted a good kitchen shear for cutting poultry. These fit the bill. I would give them a 5 star except they are just a little hard to open fully with my hand. I am still able to use them with no problem.
Customer Review: Good at what they're meant for, not necessarily for other stuff Summary: 4 Stars
These are great at their primary job of cutting things, but Kershaw saw fit to throw in a menagerie of other features, and some of those work better than others. Fortunately the ones that work the least well are generally the least central to what you'd use scissors for.
Here's the list, in order of priority:
1) Cutting things. Works great, as high end shears should.
2) The hinge that lets you lift the two blades apart for easy cleaning: Smooth, efficient, tough, works like a charm.
3) The bottle opener notch: Opens bottles like a dream - and it's actually really handy to have one of these sticking out of your knife block so you don't have to search through draws every time you have a bottle that needs opening.
4) The plastic handles for a comfortable grip: The plastic is rather hard, and the part you grip isn't overly broad, so they aren't actually particularly comfortable to use. Think of those big huge snippers you used to find in grade school for cutting up big bits of cardboard - feels like those, except with much nicer cutting blades.
5) The plastic grip for opening stuck jars: Worthless. I tried using it, and while it's a lovely idea, the plastic is so smooth that the jars I tried just rotated merrily between the "grips". I had far more traction using my bare hand to open it. Maybe they had rubber in mind, or a different plastic when they designed the shears (so it would be comfortable and grip well), and abandoned it in favor of something more durable, but trying to use these things was like trying to wedge the jar between your microwave and the edge of your LED monitor. Mildly pretty to look at, but otherwise totally useless.
6) The screwdriver / jar opener tabs: Haven't had call to use them, but seem to be of some potential use, though I suspect that for driving screws you'd be far more comfortable with an actual screwdriver.
7) The nut cracker: Haven't used it, but I'm skeptical. It seems sharp enough to get a good grip, but the part that grabs the nut is right between where your fingers go, so I can't imagine you'd get much leverage.
8) The "bone notch": No idea, never tried to cut up something with big bones in it, but seems like it should work fine.
So in a nutshell, it does all the things that you'd expect good scissors to do, and does them well. The extra bonus fancy features they throw in are a mixed bag.
