Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Zwilling J.A. Henckels Twin Grip Colored Paring Knives, Set of 4

Customer Review: Hurrah! Good deal
Summary: 5 Stars

These are some excellent paring knives. The price is killer @ $23.00.

Why are the good, two man henckels so cheap? The handles are a bit on the "plasticky" side. They appear to function fine, just feel like a cheaper knife in hand, but they cut like a dream.

They're a good mix for the money, you've got your paring needs covered --and as cheap as they were, I can chuck them in the dishwasher with confidence.

Customer Review: I love these knives!
Summary: 5 Stars

There was a set of these at work, so I knew before I ordered that I'd love them. They're light, comfortable, cut beautifully, and have convenient color-coded handles so you can grab the correct one out of the block. Love 'em!

Customer Review: Lightweight, sharp, less room for knuckles
Summary: 4 Stars

Yellow knife: The "low point" knife. If you hold the knife edge to the cutting board, the handle gets in the way and most of the blade does not touch the surface. In fact, if you wrap your hand around the handle, only the point of the blade touches the cutting board. To cut, you draw with the point and pull toward you onto what you're cutting. The blade is straight, no curves. I read it's good for apples.

Green knife: The 4" paring knife. Similar to the yellow knife -- however, the front 20% of the blade can make contact with the cutting board and there is a small curve. I read that this is the most used knife, and it's the paring knife, so that's accurate.

Blue knife: Bird's beak knife, good for peeling fruit (although a peeler is safer), decorative work, and cutting small fruit.

Red knife: Serrated, for sandwiches and tomatoes.

All knives: The blades are German-made, flexible, and extremely sharp. A bit light in your hands. These knives scare me the most as far as the potential for accidental pokes. There is no bolster (meaning no protective curved dull area which separates the handle and the blade). Only the red knife doesn't scare me.

Other thoughts:

The handles leave virtually no space between your knuckles and the cutting board. The situation is worse for those with larger hands. If you look at other paring knives, you'll see that there is more space for your knuckles, that the blade is angled such that you can make full contact with the cutting board if you want, and that there is a bolster to protect your forefinger. Look elsewhere if what you are looking for is a single, go-to paring knife. If what you're looking for is what I've described for the four knives, then it's a great price for a set of super-sharp knives.

Customer Review: Love These Knives
Summary: 5 Stars

I've had a set of these knives for more than 5 years and they get used virtually every day, usually several times. They're in the dishwasher almost every day as well. I have the ones made in Germany, not the Henckels international. I've read it makes a difference. I also have a large set of Cutco knives. The Henckels set is the one I constantly reach for. About the only cutco pieces I use are the chef's knife and the bread knife for larger loaves of bread. The Henckels set is used for everything else. Spent a ton of money on the expensive set and I use the dirt cheap set. I've given this set as gifts to many people including most members of the family. The piece I use the most is the bird's beak knife. Fantastic for peeling everything I don't like to use peelers. I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NOT HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH RUST. I don't expect these to work as well for things like heavy chopping jobs due to the weight and size limitations. I wish a version of a chef's knife were available. These have been downrated by sone reviewers for things such as ease of use and comfort. For a set that tends to get grabbed and used briefly, it really doesn't become an issue, but I have peeled 10 lbs of potatoes and sliced many loaves of french baguette at one time without any obvious discomfort to me. I've been told I'm a gourmet cook so I do a great deal of cooking and if I love using these knives, I would think most light-duty chefs would as well. The only negative is not having a chef's knife as the fifth in the set. (one with the wide blade)If there were a slightly longer serrated knife, I might just sell my Cutco set.

Customer Review: Love them
Summary: 5 Stars

I just got my new pair of JA Henckels colored knives from Amazon yesterday and they are awesome. I tried cutting a tomato right away and it was like cutting thru butter, super smooth and sharp!. While researching on these,I read in on of the reviews that JAHenckels has two versions of everything one is their not-so-good US version called JAHenckels Internationl and the knives will have one man embossed on it. The other is their Zilling brand which is original German JA Henckels, that has 2 men embossed.Make sure you buy the one with 2 men and not one on the logo.I did that. Also do not go for the cheaper knockoffs.
