Customer Review: Don't listen to the detractors

I respectfully disagree with the reviewers who say that this steel is short lived. I have been using one of these in my home kitchen for 2 years, and have not noticed any deterioration at all. It performs as well today as it did when brand new. I suspect that the reason that the other reviewers have had poor results is that they are bearing down on the steel WAY too hard. If you bear down, of course you're going to strip the diamonds from the surface of the steel. Remember that the purpose of a steel is to realign your edge, not to regrind your blade. If you use this product as intended; that is, to pass your blade lightly across it several times, you will be astonished with the results. Every knife in my kitchen is satisfyingly sharp, and all thanks to this steel. It is the only sharpening tool in my kitchen.

Keeps knives at their best so your prepping is easy and efficient. Made in Germany, this valuable steel tool easily sharpens the company's FRIODUR ice-hardened blades with just a few quick strokes. Diamond steel offers flat sides that catch the small particles removed from knife blade during sharpening. Handle is molded for comfort and has a loop ring for hanging.Although steels often are touted as sharpening tools, few actually sharpen knife blades but do perform the vital task of realigning, or "resetting," edges, which bend when contacting a cutting surface or other hard object. Because this tool's surface contains diamond dust, it's hard enough to somewhat sharpen a blade. While using this steel won't replace a professional sharpening job, which proceeds from coarse grinding to ever-finer grinding at tightly controlled angles, it will lengthen intervals between sharpenings. This steel will also perform better than a steel without diamond dust because it accomplishes the final task of a professional sharpening, which is polishing the edge to a fine point while realigning the edge. The rule is that a steel should be at least as long as the knife blade being drawn across it, and this steel's 12-inch rod handles all household knives.
