I bought this heat diffuser years ago. It is an invaluable cooking device that sits on top of my gas cooktop burner. I use it for soups, sauces, stews, oatmeal, spinach; nearly everything that needs to cook for a while. It takes the worry out of burning items and prevents things from boiling over. It is worth its weight in gold. I really should have two of these diffusers when preparing multiple dishes. Yes, it does discolor, but that isn't bothersome to me. I love the antique look. Buy it. You will wonder how you ever cooked without it.
