We have only had this model for a couple of months but almost immediately we realized we weren't going to like it because it was not nearly as good at compacting as our previous (and much cheaper) compactor from Sears. The key thing to look for in a compactor is not the initial down-and-up quick compaction. They all do that and it is nearly worthless. It provides minimal net compaction since the smashed contents tend to expand back to something near their previous size. You could do that with your foot. Instead, we have learned that it is the ability to leave the ram in the down position for extended periods that allows for a bag to be filled for weeks and provides the real value over what you could do with your hand or foot. Who knows why GE doesn't have a model that provides that second form of compacting.
