It's inexpensive and it does the job. I've used this egg timer in meetings, when we've needed to do quick, 3-minute updates. It is most helpful in leveling the playing field--it gives the specialist the same amount of time as the executive.
The egg timer doesn't look expensive, which these days is good. I've had 4 of them in use for a weekly status meeting that's been going on for almost 6 months and they've held up well.
If you intend to use an egg timer for this purpose, you will need to buy more than 1--you don't want someone to finish talking before their time has run out and then wait for the sand to run down so the next person has a full 3 minutes. You'll need at least 2 timers and since the meeting I've been using it in is a big one, I've had 4 placed evenly around the table.
I'm assuming the egg timers are accurate but I haven't tested them against a digital clock. They're close enough for my purposes.
