Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Amana ACA057F 5200-BTU Window Air ConditionerCustomer Review: definitely not "ultra quiet" Summary: 2 StarsI've been on a search for a quiet window unit since I dropped my dependable Whirlpool on the floor while installing it this season. Landed right on the fan switch. Although I have to say that Whirlpool did not have an especially quiet compressor. It was a pretty good thump when the compressor came on that I never liked, but tolerated it for the last 3 or 4 years because I got it at Sears Outlet for really cheap.
So while shopping I saw some reviews for Amana that said they were quiet. For this model I was sent to target.com. I have a small 10x10 bedroom so naturally am pretty close to the window. I have no problem with continual fan noise and actually prefer sleeping with a white noise sound, and the fan on this Amana is not any louder or softer than most. It is pretty funny though because you can see this plastic fan whirring away through the air vent. Lots of plastic, and the side curtain arrangement is very cheap and thin. The compressor coming on and off is also not any louder or softer than most I'd say, though definitely not "ultra quiet". The problem I couldn't live with is a constant gurgling sound that never stops and is loud enough not to be ignored, at least not by me. I used it only one night and took it back to a Target store for a refund. Today I bought a Samsung 6,000 BTU AW06NCM8 at Lowe's. It was $132 and seems pretty well built. I won't know till overnight how it sleeps, but so far I think this is the one. The fan is quieter than most I'd say, and although the compressor makes a slight thump when going off, it doesn't seem that bad. Could be different when I'm trying to fall asleep and will see tonight, but if you live near a Lowe's I'd give it a try. You can always return, maybe it's on their website too.
