We have has this same 12000 btu unit for three years. It is a very effective dehumidifier and a fairly decent air conditioner. We do have an advantage in that the house is shaded from much of the summer sun and we have a bright aluminum colored metal roof, both of which help reduce heating from the summer sun. We use the unit to cool about 800 sq. ft. of southerly exposure on the first floor of a two story 1500 sw. ft. home. That is too much for this size but it still does well enough to make the downstairs area comfortable when outdoor heat and humidity are at 90 degree's or above with 85-95% humidity. Some days it seems to work more effectively as a dehumidifier. It is very quiet. There are absolutely no odors of any kind. I think the earlier reviewer might have gotten a defective unti that should have been replaced by the factory. Oil fumes from a compressor and electronic failures are never a good sign. I really like the unit's portability and the way the air intake and exhaust work. We made a plywood panel for a small window and simply plug the hoses into the panel. The display is not easy to read and is dim but it has always been dim right from the day we first plugged it in. This is something that could be improved and would help. I also really like the overload breaker on the back of the power plug. When there is a power interruption the unit shuts down and it's breaker must be reset before it will restart. This protects the AC unit from intermittent cycling when there are multiple power surges and/or interuptions during summer storms. The water tank is easy to empty and large enough that it takes all day to fill it on hot humid days, so it only has to be emptied once or twice in 24 hours. It would help a lot if the unit had a way to shutdown whne the collection tank is full. Two overflows onto our living room floor were not fun. I do like the outlet for a hose connection so the water in the collection tank can just flow outside somewhere and after the second overflow we ran a drain hose from the provided outlet to about 10 feet from the house. Last year, after two full summers of use and just before it's third summer, I removed all the covers and found a considerable amount of dust and dirt had accumulated and reduced the air flow through the condensor coils. Compressed air and a small brush cleaned it all out and after the covers were reattached it worked like a brand new unit. After three summers we have had no performance complaints. However, I do not believe it has 12,000 BTU's of cooling capacity. Comparing it's output to other window units we have it seems more like 10,000 btu's but it is an excellent dehumidifier and it does cool well. The only areas I would improve are the casters which are too small, one has already failed, make sure it really does have 12,000 btu's of cooling capacity, and the brightness of the display. No real serious complaints after three full summers of pretty much excellent usage.
