Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Crock-Pot SCR151-WG 1-1/2-Quart Round-Shaped Manual Slow Cooker, WhiteCustomer Review: Cute and nice size--but no temperature control Summary: 3 Stars
This crock pot is the perfect size to make steel cut oats overnight. It perfectly holds my normal recipe of four cups water to 1 cup oats.
But I should have read the reviews before buying as I did not realize there would be no temperature control! This crockpot's single setting is supposed to be equivalent to low on most crockpots, but as other reviews note it is a little warmer than that. I sleep eight or nine hours and that is way too long to cook oatmeal on low-medium. I will be buying another brand of 1.5 quart crockpot to cook my oatmeal, with three temperature settings. I plan to add an external timer to it made by Rival; Rival claims its Timer works on most brands of crockpot, so I'm going to give it a try!
This crock pot would be excellent for keeping gravy warm at a buffet. I'm going to keep it for that. However, if I were buying again I definitely would buy one of the several brands which have a temperature settings. Those models are the same price and offer an additional feature.
Customer Review: Good size, occasional hot spot (updated 6/07) Summary: 4 Stars
June 2007 update to my original review: I still have the same pros/cons for this product. I've used it many times since I wrote that review and the hot spot problem has not changed. I've found some work-arounds, though; for example, when I make oatmeal overnight, I put the crock pot on a timer (the kind you use to set your lamps to turn on/off while you're on vacation) and have the oatmeal start cooking at about 1 AM and I also added extra water to the crock for the oatmeal. So after months of use, I still feel the same way about this item and have found it useful enough that I'm willing to experiment with work-arounds instead of just getting rid of it.
Original review:
I ordered this crock pot to replace an older version that didn't have a removable crock.
What I like about it:
- Crock is removable and dishwasher safe.
- Size is perfect for 2-person meals.
- Doesn't take up much storage space.
- Glass lid allows you to see the contents.
My concerns:
- Seems to have a hot-spot on one side but it's only an issue if I leave the dish cooking longer than I should (such as if I get home from work really late.)
- The lid doesn't look like it fits well; however, I don't think I'm losing any heat. So it might just be an aesthetic issue.
I have used this crock pot 6 times in the past month and am very happy with it. So far the "hot-spot" issue has affected two meals and I was able to just cut off the overcooked part. But that's the reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5.
A general warning to anyone who is not familiar with crock pot cooking: the days of putting a dish in the crock pot before you leave for work and it being perfectly done when you return home are over, in my opinion. The new slow cookers/crock pots cook *much* faster and hotter than those our mothers owned in the 70's. My large, 5-quart Rival crock pot actually boils when I turn it on high! I suggest you experiment with yours on a weekend before you go off and leave it cooking unattended while you are at work for 9 or 10 hours. I find that if a crock pot recipe calls for cooking on low for 9 hours, it only takes 6 hours in my small or large crock pots.
If you enjoy good oatmeal try the oatmeal recipe in the instruction manual. I ate the instant/microwave oatmeal for years but have now become hooked on the "real" oatmeal we make overnight in the crock pot.
Customer Review: Great for Indian cooking for dhals, biriyani & more Summary: 5 Stars
A friend gave this as a gift to me, and I did not use it for over 6 months. Once I did, I was pleasantly surprised at how well this slow cooker cooks lentils. I put the lentils with the water into the pot in the morning, and have cooked lentils for dinner.
I've put my pressure cooker away since this cooks without any mess.
It works well for Indian sambar, rasam, chole, vegetable curries and biriyani.
Indian cooking can be messy and the slow cooker helps to keep the kitchen very clean and without splatters.
Customer Review: Great for dip Summary: 4 Stars
I got this specifically to keep a bean dip hot for a family gathering. It worked fantastically. It was a perfect size, and the temperature was just right.
