Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Chaney Instrument 00985 Wireless Refrigerator Freezer Thermometer Alarm SetCustomer Review: Barely worked then just quit Summary: 1 Stars
The LCD display was hard to read right out of the box....had to hold the main unit under the right light at the right angle with just the right tilt to the head. Dealt with it until it starting resetting just by picking up the main unit. For a while it would hunt for the sensor and eventually you could use it doing the magic tilting adjustment. Then it would not reset at all and now when it is picked up, it just beeps and shows lines on the screen. Tried new batteries in the main unit and the remote sensor, no change. Have just printed the RA and return label...sending it back and I am NOT reordering another. The point of buying this model was to have an alarm to signify temperature changes. Can't rely on it.
Customer Review: Be careful about the batteries Summary: 2 Stars
If you purchase the Chaney Wireless Monitor, DO NOT follow the instructions on batteries. It will not work with anything but low grade generic batteries. If you try the recommended lithium batteries, you are in for a surprise. It will not work. Also, you can forget setting the upper and lower temperature limits. Have tried too many times to follow written instructions with absolutely no success. If you call the manufacturer, be prepared for a 10-20 minute wait and then you get some one with attitude. We just use our to visually monitor our appliances. It does the job on this.
Customer Review: Best Available, but Needs Improvement Summary: 4 Stars
I had a hard time getting the unit to sync up, but I got it to work by placing the thermometer inside the frige door and then placing the receiver right over top of it from the outside. Then it registered. Did the same for the freezer. Now it works fine. Kenmore. I'm not sure it's accurate though because my bottom mount freezer gets up to 15 degrees at night. Wierd.
Be nice if the wireless was stronger. Sounds crazy, but I wouldn't mind monitoring it from online. The alarm isn't going to help you much if you're not there the day the frige goes bad.
As of 9-21-09 the freezer remote stopped working. I tried every type of battery except lithium. I'm waiting for the lithium batteries to arrive.
Customer Review: Better than you might expect Summary: 4 Stars
For the price, this is an excellent device. I haven't tested it's range that much because I haven't had a need to. At the moment it is just held to the outside of one of the freezers by the magnets on the back of the receiver. Some of the reviews rated this unit poorly, but what they wrote did not instill confidence they really knew what they were talking about. I took a chance since there really isn't much readily available to compete with this remote thermometer in it's price range. One of the things I suspected by the poor reviews was that the expectation was much too high for such an inexpensive device. Inexpensive electronic thermometers ususally do not update right away. Infact, they may take a minute or more to update the display with the sensor. Such is the case with this unit. It takes a while to update. Under the circumstances of what this thermometer is supposed to do, this is quite acceptable. It monitors the temperature, records a min/max, allows any custom cold temp alarm setting you may need, sounds an alarm outside of your setting, wirelessly, all at a very affordable price.
