Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Component Design Digital Candy Thermometer, Timer and Clock

Customer Review: Great Features but it Broke
Summary: 3 Stars

I love the features on this thermometer! The timer and temperature alert combination is incredible for cooking because both values are so important. The temp alert allows you cook it internally to perfection but sometimes you want to check it after 20 minutes to make sure it's not over-browning. Great features.

First annoyance is that the buttons are hard to press - you have to hit them just right. Not a deal break but annoying. The biggest problem was that a couple weeks after I bought it, the bottom left portion of the LCD broke making the thermometer unreadable. They are replacing the unit but at my own shipping expense. Maybe this one is just a lemon...

Customer Review: Mostly OK.
Summary: 3 Stars

Lasted 3 years with heavy use but will NOT measure up to its advertised temperature (392F), so is NOT a candy thermometer.

Confusing instructions but not a show stopper. Probe will break if put in dishwasher (as do they all). Response to button pushes was kinda slow. (for this reason am looking at others)

Accurate temps in the lower ranges (<200F) as compared with a Fluke thermocouple multimeter and two other instant read thermometers in my kitchen.

Customer Review: Multifunctional and easy to use!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a solid thermometer that works well in the oven and in liquids for candy making, etc. I highly recommend this to anyone who is looking for a multi-use kitchen thermometer. Easy to use!

Customer Review: Not good for candy!
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought two of these; one for me and one for a gift. I used it immediately to make English toffee. The temperature never registered above 220 F and it burned! I checked the temperature with my old candy thermometer (with the mercury) and it said it was over 390 F. So, I took out the other one and tried to make another batch of toffee. This time I used both this thermometer and my old candy one. Again, this digital thermometer was always low. So, I am returning the both of these digital thermometers. Maybe they work well for meat but I don't want to risk it! I am very disappointed!

Customer Review: Sometimes less is more
Summary: 5 Stars

I've had other digital thermometers with pre-programmed temperatures that were just confusing to use. Finding the preferred temperature for any meat or poultry item is such a simple matter (any decent cookbook will have them, many recipes specify, and there are always the many online resources) that I much prefer the straightforward approach here of just inserting the probe and checking the display occasionally. I also LOVE the little gadget that allows you to attach it to a saucepan for candies and other liquids that need careful timing temperature-wise. I happily threw out my old candy thermometer after using this one. It's more accurate and easier to read. Highly recommend.
