Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Swissmar Borner V-1001 V-Slicer Plus Mandoline 6 Piece Set

Customer Review: Add me to the LOVE IT list
Summary: 5 Stars

I've had mine for 20 years. I saw one in a professional chef's kitchen then bought mine from an infomercial. I use it all the time.

It's very safe to use, if you use it properly, with the food holder always. That last little bit of veggie can be easily chopped with a couple of slices from a knife - don't be tempted to try to push it through with your fingers. I always pop the last little bit of tomato or carrot in my mouth - yum.

It seems some folks haven't figured out how to dice with it. I make Indian food and the curry sauce takes lots and lots of onions. I can dice an onion in under 30 seconds with this (safely and not hurrying). Put the onion in the holder. Slide it across just the julienne blade with it lying flat on the counter - this is a prep slice, then put the blade in the slicer. Turn the onion 45 degrees and slice it - it will come out diced, then turn it a 1/4 turn and slice, turn and slice, turn and slice - the whole onion comes out diced beautifully.

The same can be done with potatoes and tomatos. I seriously can dice up 6 onions in 4 minutes (after I peel the top layer and chop the ends off). There isn't any time for tears to even start.

I just figured out something! If I only cut the top and not the end off the onion, that would be the part that was left over in the holder. It is a part I throw away anyway! Can't wait to try the new technique.

The holder looks like it is designed to only go down to the blade one way - with the wide part running down the rails but it doesn't catch even if you have the narrow sides parallel with the rails. So just switch back and forth for dices. No need to make knife cuts in the veggies.

That tiny sliver of veggie that doesn't go through the slicer can be chopped up in seconds by hand or if you don't mind wasting it - throw it away or compost it - it's only worth about a penny! Certainly not worth a trip to the emergency room because you tried to force it through with your fingers.

Don't get complicated with the washing either. Just run it under warm water and use a soapy brush if you want. I admit that I usually just rinse it and drop it in the holder - it still looks and works great after 20 years.

Customer Review: Affordable little wonder
Summary: 5 Stars

I really, really wanted a mandoline but just couldn't see spending well over $100 for one. Saw the reviews on this and thought I'd give it a try. What a terrific buy! I've had it for a year now. When I first tried it with a red onion, I complained that it wasn't doing anything since I didn't feel any resistance at all. To my surprise there was a pile of beautifully sliced red onions under the machine. No effort at all! After a year it still slices as effortlessly. Just sliced through 5 lbs of potatoes for gratins and home-made chips and couldn't be happier with the performance of this slicer. I don't care for the safety guide (personal preference) so I use a cut-safe glove to hold the food items for faster and more efficient slicing. The glove makes it much easier for julienne cuts since that does require a bit more effort and I seem to fumble with the safety guide. Use caution if washing by hand as it will slice your sponge or washcloth with ease! And the size is perfect so storage is easy. It's sits on my counter top next to the cannisters and no one realizes it's there. It does indeed have a bit of a cheap look to it so I hesitate to buy them for wedding gifts, but it really is a nice slicer!

Customer Review: Amazing Results Thanks to the Internet
Summary: 5 Stars

Having been a home cook my entire life, with some restaurant experience as a sous chef and above average knife skills, but disappointed with the slicing capabilities of a couple of different (electric) food processors, I purchased, over the years, two different mandolines - the first (brand forgotten) was a waste of time and landed in the scrap heap. Recently, I decided to try a mandoline once more but before I purchased anything I read various user reviews on Amazon and decided on the Swissmar Borner V-Slicer which is not, to my knowledge, available locally. Well, I must say I was astonished when the product arrived - the knife-studded contraption filled me with dread so before attempting to use it I once again turned to the internet - this time to view a how-to video on YouTube (highly recommended!). Within moments, and with great care, I decided to finely slice one large Yukon Gold potato for Pommes Anna, an elaborate French preparation requiring slices as thin as potato chips - and I was not disappointed. The Swissmar exceeds all expectations - in seconds I sliced a very large beautiful mound of perfectly thin potatoes, without any effort, without any difficulty, without any danger. I am amazed. And all for $37 bucks. If you love to cook, this is The One.

Customer Review: Amazing piece of kitchen equipment!

Wonderful slicer! I'm so glad I bought one, and wish I had gotten one sooner! I love having fresh veggies, and it really makes it easy to cut them up! Highly recommended! And you can't beat the price!

Customer Review: Amazing slicer with amazing price!
Summary: 5 Stars

If you had used other slicer before, you will see this one is really worth it. It is very sharp and easy to use. I tried to slice a ripe tomato with thin blade, it came out nicely. Just becareful when you get closer to the blade then you will be fine.
