Customer Review: "Hard-to-hang-on-to" handle

I've used this waffle iron about 10 times so far - for waffles, French toast or grilled sandwiches. It works fine. The only thing I don't like about it is the handle for lifting the top. The grooves run front to back when the lid is closed (top to bottom when it's up). Several times as I was trying to lift the lid the handle has slipped from my fingers causing the lid to come crashing down. If the grooves ran sideways instead, this wouldn't happen. I'm thinking of filing some cross-wise grooves to improve the grip.
