Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Black & Decker BL1900 5-Speed Blender with 48-Ounce Glass Jar, Brushed StainlessCustomer Review: Don't buy unless you don't intend to use! Summary: 1 Stars
I purchased this item 30 days ago at a local store. After using it half a dozen times for smoothies (something a 550 watt motor should easily be able to handle) the motor stopped working. I exchanged it at the store feeling that I had just received a defective product. I used the new one 1 time...the motor died. Ridiculous. Needless to say, I returned it for a full refund. I won't be buying a black & decker blender ever again!
Customer Review: Electrical Malfunction Summary: 2 Stars
This was a decent blender while it lasted. Crushes/blends ice and frozen fruits fairly well.
One night, I heard a loud noise that I thought was the vacuum, only I knew that couldn't be it because my roommate never vacuums. I went to check it out, and it was the blender... started up by itself! I begun to believe in ghosts, but thought more likely it was a problem with the blender. I tried to get used to just keeping it unplugged.
However, after about a year, the blender has become completely useless due to more electrical malfunction. The buttons don't do what they're supposed to do, sometimes I can't get it to run at all. I will look elsewhere for my next blender.
Customer Review: Go Ahead - Give It A Try!! Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased this blender about 6 months ago. I've used it mostly to make smoothies. It's done a great job for me! I liked it because of it's appearance, 48oz GLASS jar and 550 Watt-ice crushing motor. My tip is to actually USE the "ice crushing" Button to crush your ice! (It will prolong the life of your blender!) I have had to jiggle it a little and add liquid when the smoothie is more thick than smooth, but then it moved fine; I think that's typical. It's done a great job for me, no complaints thus far. I would recommend this blender to anyone who asks. It's a great product, especially for the price, and it looks great, too!!
5/08 - still crushing ice, still making smoothies, still love it!!!
Customer Review: Good Choice Summary: 4 Stars
I love this blender! I bought it about eight months ago. I basically got it because I liked the way it looks and it was a good price. I haven't had any problems at all and I've made all kinds of shakes, smoothies, margaritas, etc. I thought I'd post a review since so many of them were negative. I've been very pleased with mine!
Customer Review: Good for standard home use Summary: 4 Stars
I've owned mine for over a year and with almost daily use (many times even twice a day) it still works as well as the first time. It's possible the harsher reviews here may be consumers expecting a commercial-quality blender. Make no mistake, this is not a Vita-Mix machine and it isn't intended to work like one. It's great for normal home consumer use and has paid for itself in my opinion.
I don't rate this a 5-star item because it does not have a smoothie "stir-stick" attachment in the top (the thing that those cheap smoothie makers have). If Black & Decker offered that attachment as an option for this blender, I would give it 5 stars.
Here are the caveats:
You have to use some common sense with the ice crushing, which can be frustrating if you expect to throw a bunch of ice cubes in and have a smoothie in seconds with no effort. I find I do have to stop the pulsing, remove the lid, and stir the ice and ingredients around many times before seeing any action (hence why the "stir stick" attachment is needed). If you let the motor continue revving without stirring the ingredients to give it resistance, the motor will burn out -- as will an $80 or $100 blender.
Also, you'll need to use a recipe (as with most blenders). If you don't put the right ingredients in there to help liquify the product and get it at a good consistency early you will have trouble. Just tossing in a bunch of fruit and ice won't blend right, won't give you the expected results, and will decrease the life of your motor.
